It's not gummy lubricant.. From the description: There is an internal spring that keeps the 2 shafts in sync (they turn together). They will turn separately when both shafts are grasped and one is twisted. IF YOU WANT THEM TO SPIN INDEPENDENTLY: The spring can be removed by taking the top of the potentiometer off, and then pulling out the outer shaft. The spring sits directly below and can be removed easily. VIEW THE LISTING PICTURES TO SEE THIS PROCESS
