Whiskey-soaked, no-holds-barred klezmer of another kind
Geoff Berner. Now there's a guy. A diminutive Canadian Jew whose mission it is to bring the klezmer style of music to the forefront of the underground cult scene, armed with naught but whiskey, his accordion, his voice and maybe a little help from his friends, which will irrevocably, turn out to be you. "The Wedding Dance of the Widow Bride" is his third studio album; the second of his planned trilogy of klezmer albums. Having already done an album dedicated to whiskey and drinking ("Whiskey Rabbi") Berner shifts his focus to the origin of the klezmer style of music; the traditional Jewish wedding. Berner belts out one powerful, seductive and thought-provoking number after the next, accompanied as always by Diona Davies on violin and Wayne Adams on drums. The unabashed "Good Luck Now" ... Geoff Berner. Now there's a guy. Berner belts out one powerful, seductive and thought-provoking number after the next, accompanied as always by Diona Davies on violin and Wayne Adams on drums. The unabashed "Good Luck Now" (the "sequel" to "Lucky Goddamn Jew" from "Whiskey Rabbi") is a typical Berner number, with clever references to social classes and whatnot. "Weep, Bride, Weep" is a somber and brutally honest song written as a "piece of advice" to a woman newly wed to a "closeted Marxist who thinks that marriage is state prostitution". Fittingly, the song has an equally dark sing-a-long chorus. "Widow Bride" (notice a theme in song titles here?) is, on the other hand, a song written as a father's advice to his son about the pleasures of marrying widowers. "Queen Victoria" (a near-unrecognizable cover of the Leonard Cohen song) is Berner at his most unintelligible, raucous and insane. "The Fiddler Is a Good Woman" is a subtle tribute to Ms. Davies, appropriately featuring the meanest violin section on the album. "Traitor Bride" (there it is again! The creativity of this guy astounds me!) is perhaps the apex of the album; a quiet, disturbing ballad of a Jewish woman's deadly attraction to a soldier from the wrong side and her sad end as one of the traitor brides, hated by the people after the end of the war. Berner's soft vocal delivery as well as a fantastic violin section that breaks the silence of Berner's voice and accordion make this truly the epitome of the album's theme. "Can't Stay Dry" is a relatively unremarkable song - perhaps the album's worst, but not at all unlistenable or bad. "Song to Reconcile" is the album's best example of Berner's off-colour and to most people, inflammatory, deeply disturbing or irreverent humor; being a song sung by the accordion player of a Klezmer wedding band, imploring the families of the bride and groom to try and coexist peacefully for the duration of the wedding. Whether or not they will be able to do so is not answered; instead, we're left with Berner's witty last line: "How are we going to get them together? / I'm just the accordion player, so I don't know." Ending the album is a heartfelt ballad, "Would It Kill You?", which is the closest the album gets to Berner's earlier, non-klezmer compositions, and indeed, typical music. It's a good finish to the album, and is pretty deep for a song written about leaving. Okay, so the true last song of the album is an instrumental version of "Weep, Bride, Weep" but I usually skip it (not that it's bad) when I'm not having karaoke night. In the end, "Widow Bride" is not as well-rounded or instantly likeable as Berner's hedonistic "Whiskey Rabbi", but it's still a good collection of well-composed, alternative klezmer of the fiercest kind.
