Lee products are my go to for reliable quality and value. This product was a good price and this vendor offers good prices and prompt delivery. The product purchase was based on the advise of more experienced reloaders to have a handheld option which allows press independent priming when desired.

The older model Lee Auto-Prime... use at your own risk!

These older Auto-Prime tools can be dangerous if not used intelligently, as there is a greatly increased chance of mass detonation of the primers compared with later models of Lee tools. Supposedly (not 100% sure I believe this) 2 primers detonating together are 4 times as powerful as one by itself, and 5 are 25 times as powerful. At any rate it could be very bad for your eyesight, if not actually deadly, to have a whole tray full go off in front of your face. But wow the old tool works slick. I've never tried any later model, but have read bad things about their reliability. Using my original old tool I bought in the 1980's, I have never had any detonation of even a single primer though I do remember crushing one sideways into the primer pocket at least once over the years. I am curious ...

  • Top critical review

Didn’t work nearly as well as I anticipated.

Having used the old LEE Thumb squeezer primer tool for decades, With great success and performance, I was disappointed with this new style. Overly complicated, parts that should be made out of metal made out of plastic instead, less than intuitive operation, AND Multiple misfeeds of primers, despite using the tool at the proper angle. Primers feeding from the tray anvil up as required, would often be fed on top of the ram sideways or upside down, resulting in improper installation of the primer and jamming up of the entire priming tool. This required Removing the shell holder case and all, so that the primer can be driven from the primer pocket with an old style Decapping pin. Tool also came with no shell holders, as in NONE. But I knew this and it required additional expense of buying ...

  • must have for reloading

really nice for a quick way to prime shells. come with both large an small primer attachments. you still need shell holders, the case has a place to store the holders you use. works great and you have a good way to feel the press of the primer. easy to use

  • Deja Vu

I broke the pivot rod on two of my earlier model Lee hand primers, but still prefer hand priming my cases versus using a press. The new model has a couple of good features which help prevent issues like doubling onto the priming ram, but the new primer holder is a bit putsey. It still does provide a smooth and consistent feel when priming cases and I haven't found anything I like better without breaking the bank.

  • a disappointing "improvement"

Having owned the earlier generation of Lee Auto-prime tools, I was very disappointed in both the design and quality of their next-gen Auto-prime tool. The new "elevator" feature, which purports to increase safety, is overly complicated and I don't really see the point in it at all. It usually fails to feed a primer to the ram, doing so only about 3 in 10 attempt while I was trying to prime 100 cases of .45ACP. I also don''t think much of the new tray design, but that may just be personal preference; It feels flimsy, and I don't trust the plastic to last longer than a few months. YMMV but for my part, I'm going to look for a older design Lee Auto-primer.
