  • The Last Knight (John of Gaunt)

Cantor's THE LAST KNIGHT adds a personal touch to a quiet figure in world history, John of Gaunt. Although he had a claim to a royal throne, he chose peace and had several children and grandchildren who would eventual rule from the thrones of Europe. He is lauded as having almost single-handedly brought England from the dark ages of the Medieval Period into the Modern Era. His advocacy for diplomacy, education, and the church helped him make his world a better place. Cantor helps to bring him alive and to give history a face. Very scholarly, yet readable. I bought this book for personal family history study, but found it fascinating regardless of the connection. This is a lesson in legacy! Greg Burton 18th great-grandson of John of Gaunt

  • Excellent

Excellent review of time made more interesting by experiences of specific individual with whom I have been involved since reading "Katherine" by Anya Seton 50 years ago. Chaucer comments particularly interesting.

  • The Last Knight

As are thousands of others, I am directly descended from Sir John of Gaunt. I purchase any book I can find about him. Mr. Cantor is not only an impressive writer, but an excellent historian as well. I respect an author who does his/her research homework thoroughly and notes each source. The oft-honored Professor Cantor made me feel like I really got to know my heroic ancestor. I appreciated that opportunity.
