Although they have the same title, the 2009 high-def PS3 version of Bionic Commando is a sequel to the 1988 8-bit game for Nintendo Entertainment System -- at least as far as the slightly re-envisioned story goes. Players return to the role of Nathan "R.A.D." Spencer, a heroic veteran soldier who has been enhanced with a powerful, extendable, metallic arm. The hero can use his arm to grab objects or attack enemies at a distance, to pull himself upwards to the ceiling or lower himself down, and to propel himself through an area at high speed, horizontally and vertically, by swinging from one handhold to the next.<br><br>After infiltrating the headquarters of the group known as the Imperialists and single-handedly foiling an elaborate plot to revive the greatest evil in modern history, Nathan Spencer should have been hailed forevermore as a hero. Instead, he is betrayed by the leader of the government he served and he is sentenced to death for crimes he did not commit. Yet on the day of his execution, fate steps in again: A terrorist attack of mass destruction turns the city to rubble, leaving those who betrayed the hero in need of his services once more. And so, Spencer's role reverses, from scapegoat soldier to humankind's best hope for survival: the Bionic Commando.<br><br>In addition to the single-player campaign, online multiplayer matches feature bionically enhanced versions of deathmatch, king of the hill, and other time-tested modes of play. In single- or multiplayer games, many approaches are available in combat. Shooting is usually an option, and a commando can hold enemies at a distance as he peppers them with gunfire. The arm's grappling hook-like hand itself can be used as a weapon, at any distance. The arm can lift heavy objects, even when fully extended, allowing the hero to hold something over an enemy and then let gravity do the dirty work. Unlike earlier iterations in Capcom's Bionic Commando line, the game is rated M by the ESRB for its presentation of violence, blood, and coarse language.

This game has to be one of the most simple and predictable and poorly-acted and organized game ever created. There is absolutely no sense of involvement whatsoever, and you find yourself doing nothing really but going to nodes to deactivate air mines to swing off of. The game is easily beatable in a few measly hours. The graphics are sub-par, especially for an '09 game. Despite this rant, the game is just dang fun! It's like a combination of James Bond and Spiderman. Everyone loved to play Spiderman just to be able to swing around town freely. In Bionic Commando, you have the capability of swinging around anywhere you want, and it's a blast. There are several different ways to kill your opponent, whether you use a small array of weapons or unique moves with the claw. The gameplay ... This is the first rue sequel to the NES smash hit Bionic Commando. It delivers everything you'd expect from a third gen gaming system. The environments are massive, and look and feel great, the weapons are well devised and intuitive, the movement and behavior is pretty spot on but occasionally you find a small glitch (not the game play effecting kind, but if you chuck a dead enemy's body at something it might get stuck or do this weird stretch armstrong thing for a sec). This games uses a very spider-man-esque movement system which employs a bionic arm with a claw that reels in and out on a cable. As ridiculous as the premise may sound the resulting freedom and movement are amazingly fun. Just getting from point A to B is a blast in this game, so much so that enemies are sort of a ... But, it's not just an open world where you cruise around starting missions, the game has a linear progression, and follows a pretty well constructed path tht takes you through several environments indoors and out and has a few bosses sprinkled in. The main campaign is great to play through and features a couple of the simon-says sequences which have become so popular in games. The story is decent, though the massive weapon you uncover at the end is a bit of a head scratcher. Once you've saved humanity you have the option to go online and set about killing it, which is the real treat to this game. All the people playing the same old cookie cutter FPS games need to buy this. Imagine COD4 except you can sclae buildings, swing past someone at speed and blast them with a grenade launcher, or grab a hold of a fleeing opponent and blast them as you get drug along for the ride. The multiplayer is what really sells the game for me, which is a shame, because nobody plays it. If only a small percentage of all the people paying boring old COD4 would check this out it would make this game a must-have. But, outside factors aside, the game is well-built, and a lot of fun. The singleplyer campaign is not long, maybe 12 or so hour from start to finish, but fun enough to actually merit the multiple playthroughs that other shooters just don't get. I guess this game kind of flopped, which is depressing. The creators did a good job of reimagining the classic Bionic Commando and really making it a solid game. I guess the bulk of gamers just weren't willing to go out on a limb and check it out.

After two decades the people who crafted the original experience have often moved on to other things, leaving the continuation in the hands of people who may or may not fully understand what made the original work so well. When GRIN and Capcom released Bionic Commando: Rearmed -- a current-gen remake of the NES classic -- players put aside most concerns regarding their forthcoming third-person sequel, because Rearmed was a near-perfect recreation of the source material. But after playing through this Bionic Commando, it's clear the team missed out on the fundamental reasons the original was so successful -- instead of creating a fitting follow-up, GRIN crafted a competent but uninspired third-person shooter.Picking up any story after 20 years is a difficult proposition at best. The PS3 video game is loaded with ever more difficult obstacles and counter forces that make competing fiercely the way to advance from one objective to another...each objective is comprised of surprisingly different encounters than all the action before...all mission long, throughout the many levels, I battled my way forward gaining new skills and combat equipment... As you advance through the sub objectives the technology granted by mission control, which is delivered by scheduled in vicinity air drops, is visible on the mission warning and objective directional map...The map helps ease the way as it shows danger near in red dots well pointing the direction to all the best action, the objective spots... The game is loaded with interesting landscapes and dangerous boundaries and ... The PS3 video game is loaded with ever more difficult obstacles and counter forces that make competing fiercely the way to advance from one objective to another...each objective is comprised of surprisingly different encounters than all the action before...all mission long, throughout the many levels, I battled my way forward gaining new skills and combat equipment... I recommend the game but the TV colors on my set needed adjusting or visibility in from the day light building sections was not enough for me...The load times and reload times are slow but tolerable...The price for the level of action and diversity in technology, robots, space age craft, mechanized armor, power equipment, tanks, etc., was rare...I give the PS3 Video Game, Bionic Commando, and give it 5 stars!
