About this product

Product Information

In PLATOON, Oliver Stone draws on his experience as an infantryman in Vietnam to convey the brutality of guerrilla warfare: the heat of the jungle, the brushes with such wildlife as snakes and leeches, and, most powerfully, the presence of the unseen enemy. Charlie Sheen stars as Chris, a raw recruit, or "new meat," who serves as the film's narrator. At first he wilts under the rigorous conditions of jungle life, freezes up in a fire fight, and wonders whether he'll be able to survive. But he gradually adapts and, as time goes by, begins to see that the platoon is divided into two groups. One consists of lifers, juicers, and subintelligent whites, the other of blacks and heads. Sgt. Barnes, a combat-loving burnout (Tom Berenger), is the informal leader of the lifers, and Sgt. Elias, a free spirit (Willem Dafoe), leads the latter group. When the platoon takes some gruesome losses, an enraged Barnes kills some Vietnamese and orders the burning of their village, outraging the temporarily absent Elias. As the conflict between these two reaches its tragic climax, Chris must decide what he really values. Widely regarded as one of the finest war films ever made, PLATOON reflects not only the United States' division over Vietnam but the timeless truths of battle: terror, disorientation, exhilaration, and horrible loss.

  • Vietnam War Movie Standard

From the directing to the screenwriting, everything in this movie screams classic. Why this wasn't put on the National Film Registry's list of films right now, I'll never know. Anyway, this movie is about Chris Taylor, a young soldier sent to Vietnam to fight the Viet Cong only to find himself in the middle of a fight between two sergeants who represent two different kinds of ways to resolve a solution. And boy does this movie feel and seem authentic. After all, say what you want about Oliver Stone but don't say he doesn't know what he's talking about. Especially since he fought in it himself. All the fights, the downtimes, right up to the climax. You won't lose a moment's attention to it.

  • Platoon

War movies usually have a lot of action, but not much emotion or philosophical insights into war and life in general. Platoon is an exception. We go on a sojourn with the protagonist, played very well by a younger Charlie Sheen, through the innocence of being 18 years old and enlisting and being dropped into the middle of Vietnam. We see his struggles, his adjustments, how tired he always is, his internal conflicts with his commanding officers, his constant mode of survival, and his utter loss of innocence. Wow! Very absorbing war movie about Vietnam.

  • Platoon

I watched this movie in 1987 from the advice of men I know that fought in the Vietnam War. I was told that this movie was very similar to the war they were in. I now have a son that asks questions regarding the conflict. This movie Platoon, is what I plan on showing him. I am sure it will open his eyes.
