About this product

Product Information

Kahlil Gibran's masterpiece, The Prophet, is one of the most beloved classics of our time. Published in 1923, it has been translated into more than twenty languages, and the American editions alone have sold more than nine million copies. The Prophet is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational. Gibran's musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. Each essay reveals deep insights into the impulses of the human heart and mind. The Chicago Post said of The Prophet "Cadenced and vibrant with feeling, the words of Kahlil Gibran bring to one's ears the majestic rhythm of Ecclesiastes . . . If there is a man or woman who can read this book without a quiet acceptance of a great man's philosophy and a singing in the heart as of music born within, that man or woman is indeed dead to life and truth." With twelve full-page drawings by Gibran, this beautiful work makes an incredible gift for anyone seeking enlightenment and inspiration.

    Philosophical Gem

If you haven't read The Propet by the Lebanese author Khalil Gibran, do and you will love it. It is a treasure of non-denominational wisdom from the Prophet who is awaiting arrival of the ship which will take him "home". Before departing he speaks to the town people about various topics of profound human interest such as love, work and children. Personally, I have read it several times. Very inspirational, specially in these times.

  • amazing

In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and the man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran's prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's great religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work, pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would surely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." Free of dogma, free of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphorisms a 20th-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of other readers already have

  • The Prophet book review by Jeff Schrembs

I first read this book, on or about 1971, once I learned that it was one of Elvis Presleys' "all time" favorite books. I loved it then...and cherish it now. From the opening paragraph, Kahlil Gibran, invokes your spirit - touches your soul - and engages your heart. His words are like the freshness of a spring morn combined with the wisdom of a man...not of this World. The Prophet is a well deserved classic and should be read, even more, by this generation. For it is a beautifully written book, and the drawings by Kahlil Gibran are wonderful and consistent with his words, that brings us back to a time when words not only meant something but were structured in a poetic rythmn. Elvis Presley, contrary to many stereotypes, was a very spiritual/deep thought/introspective man who saw the beauty ...

  • Great book!

I've bought 8 copies over the years as gifts. I have two copies of my own, and this is one of the greatest books I've ever owned. As far as Theology and Philosophy goes, this is the best combination ever written. Will probably buy more copies for friends and loved ones.

  • A Memorable Book

Extremely well written, simple in style, short in text but deep with meaning. I've been gifting this book for over forty years. Each time I read "The Prophet" before sending it off to friends, I realize new meanings behind this wonderful man's words. It is right up there with Heinlein"s "Stranger in a Strange Land".
