About this product

Product Information

AUTO FOCUS is the story of Bob Crane (Greg Kinnear), who was the star of the television series HOGAN'S HEROES in the 1960s. Before he achieved that particular fame, Crane was a popular radio talk show host in Hollywood. His television work brought him a level of visibility and notoriety that he turned directly into sexual opportunity. Gallivanting with sleazy audiovisual salesman John Carpenter (Willem Dafoe), Crane built a life as a desperately addicted sex maniac. As the first home video cameras were invented, Carpenter and Crane began a prolific hobby of coercing girls to appear on tape while engaging in lewd sexual acts. The more intensely obsessed Crane became with his habit, the less his acting career mattered. He divorced his wife, allowing her custody of their two children, and remarried, having another son, only to divorce again. Meanwhile, his relentless sexual exploits became increasingly impersonal and mean-spirited. His public image suffered as he shamelessly made tasteless, sexualized remarks and got a reputation for openly displaying photographs of himself receiving oral sex. Paul Schrader's powerful, deeply effective, and darkly disturbing film makes a 180-degree transition as its story rolls out. What begins as a happy, colorful, naive portrayal of the entertainment industry becomes the nightmare of one man's disintegration in the face of temptation, money, and power.

Best! I sure wish all my local music shops hadn’t closed up (3 in the last 4 years) but I guess these folks are my new “local”. They even sent me a couple of key fobs! How friendly is that?

    Sad, true story...

Watched Hogans Heroes for years - had no idea of the star of the show having such personal, difficult problems- and then, of course, his brutal murder - we always imagine that TV and movie stars have such glamorous and wonderful lives ....not always true

  • What a Shame! He Could Have Really Been Something More

Based On The Book "The Murder of Bob Crane by Robert Graysmith, Auto Focus stands on its own at 106 minutes long and was directed by Paul Schrader and produced by Trevor Macy, James Schamus, and Rick Hess. Although Bob Crane (Greg Kinnear) had been a radio personality in Connecticut for 2 years and in Los Angelos for 6 more years he was a radio comedian, He finally was offered the lead part as Captain Hogan in a Comedy Television Show Called "Hogan's Heroes". Throughout its 6 year run from 1965-1971 Crane seemed to be in total control of himself, his family life, and his career. As an avid photographer, his favorite subject was the female form. He then met John Carpenter (Willem Dafooe), an electronic technician, who introduced him to the new technology in video equipment. John soon ...

  • Sordid side of Bob Crane's life

Kinear does a great job as the actor Bob Crane, whose wholesome looks hide a more sordid reality. Dafoe is also entirely convincing as the creep who goads Crane to walk on the wild side.

  • Auto Focus

Cold, calm, and collected, at least on the surface, Bob Crane was a walking contradiction, and this matter-of-fact, disturbing biography certainly does justice to his many sides. Kinnear's performance is the only thing fun to watch in this movie, but like all good films on unsavory subject matter, the film has a mesmerizing quality, which keept me watching, and kept me riveted. Not a film for all tastes, or even most tastes, but a brilliant character study nonetheless.

  • Auto Focus

Auto Focus is the story of popular actor Bob Cranes decent into destruction. This is a true story although one of his sons disputes much of the movie. Regardless, the movie is well acted, but does not really give a reason for Cranes actions. If you are a big fan of Hogan's Heroes I would recommend you stay away from this part of Cranes life. Some things are best remembered with childhood innocence.
