Heroes at bargain basement prices
I bought this book out of nostalgia; I remember reading it at the local library when I was in elementary school. Had I the opportunity, I would have bought that edition when it became available. This book is a part of the series that Marvel published in the 70s introducing readers to the origins of its various heros [starting with "Origins of Marvel Comics by Stan Lee"]. It is a fun time-capsule allowing readers and collectors to read how Marvels' heroes had their start. It is also a fairly inexpensive bargain when one considers the prices of attempting to buy the actual comics themselves. Obviously, the book does not compare with many of today's 'modern compilations' with their 'additional features' [stories, artwork, behind-the-scenes ... I bought this book out of nostalgia; I remember reading it at the local library when I was in elementary school. Had I the opportunity, I would have bought that edition when it became available. This book is a part of the series that Marvel published in the 70s introducing readers to the origins of its various heros [starting with "Origins of Marvel Comics by Stan Lee"]. Great tales of Marvel's historic beginnings.
The second in Stan Lee's Origin's series, this volume continues his narrations on the history of Marvel's many creations. Lee's choices were a combination of popularity and preference. His list of characters ranged from commercial successes to more unigue creations. It reprints stories of the X-Men, Ironman, the Avengers, Daredevil, Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Watcher, and Silver Surfer. He mixed origins and what Lee thought as defining moments for the characters. Included in each section are reminisences of the artists and writers of each story. This was a great nostalgic overveiw of the 60's comic creations. I first saw it as a library edition and when the oportunity arose to claim my own copy, I took it. It does lack a table of contents and bibliography, so looking for a particular story or its publication dates can be irritating. Writing and artistic credits are also lacking. It would not be a first choice for research, but is a great entertaining read.
