About this product

Product Information

Directed by Brad Siberling, LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS follows the Baudelaire orphans--Violet (Emily Browning), Klaus (Liam Aiken), and baby Sunny (played by twins Kara and Shelby Hoffman)--as they are followed by the wicked Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). A distant relative and an awful actor, Olaf is determined to claim the fortune willed to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, whose parents died in a mysterious fire. Enigmatic author Lemony Snicket (Jude Law) recounts the adventures of the three children as they change hands from the conniving Olaf to the reptile-loving Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly) to Aunt Josephine (Meryl Steep), who lives in fear of just about everything. An adaptation that condenses the first three books in the series--THE BAD BEGINNING, THE REPTILE ROOM, and THE WIDE WINDOW--into one installment, the film captures the darkly humorous tone of the popular children's novels by Lemony Snicket (AKA Daniel Handler). Carrey clearly has fun with his intentionally over-the-top role as the villain, while the young actors embody their resourceful characters wonderfully. The true star of the film, however, may be the production design of Rick Heinrichs (SLEEPY HOLLOW), which creates a visually stunning world filled with gothic mansions and ramshackle houses. By keeping the heart of the eccentric books intact, A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS proves to be an usually inventive and quirky Hollywood film.

  • Good movie, but don't expect the book!

I originally watched this movie because my children and I had read the books together. I was disappointed the first time I saw it because it was NOT the books. It had some similarities, but they had altered it more than I would have liked. I watched it again later and decided it wasn't a bad movie, I was just disappointed because we'd loved the books so much. I bought it because it is a movie that I can enjoy with my children and my friends and their children and we all enjoy it. On it's own, it really is a good, family friendly movie (which is hard to find these days!) but if you're a huge fan of the books, just think how hard it would be to transform 13 very intricate and detailed books into one movie and keep that in mind when passing judgement on the movie. All in all, it was a ...

  • If You Like the Books, You'll Enjoy the Movie

Having read the first seven Series of Unfortunate Events books with my son, I expected this movie to fall short of my expectations... as so many movies based on books can not recreate the experience, let alone add a new dimension to the written story. However, the movie Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events accurately captures the mood, tone, and humor introduced in the books. The movie even adds some extra elements of mystery and drama. My son particularly likes the way in which aspects of the books are illustrated on-screen. For example, the movie opens with a clip of a film called "The Littlest Elf". Fans of the book series will remember this is a book referred to by the author on several occasions. Also, we like the way in which the entire movie is narrated, if you ...

  • Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

The dvd replaced one stolen from my home, it is not a great movie and it is not a bad movied, my grand children are entertained by it and it does hold my attention. Kids like it because it is silly, and that is why I kind of like it too. The movie is about three children who's parents are killed while on some sort of trip. They are to be placed in the home of a relative (manical uncle) played by Jim Carrey and the agency placing the children have no idea the uncle is evil and had something to do with the demise of their parents, they escape his evil home and the agency turns them over to their aunt played by Meryl Streep (who is totaly unhinged) and of course the uncle comes back into their lives desguised as a captain (salior) and wooes the aunt. The children find themselves in a lot of ...

  • Great for the whole family

This movie is one of the silliest family movies I've seen in quite a while. Jim Carey makes another blockbuster movie as Count Olaf and the kids really compliment the actors strengths as a comedian. There is some peril issues that I had to explain to my 6 year old and that 'no, you can't really be eaten by fish'! There are about 4 death scenes(deaths not actually shown)that was a little disturbing for a small child, but other than that it was a great movie about three children and their family bond and their resilience to survive.

  • Lemony Snicket

Great movie for young (and old alike). Quite fast moving, and clever. They tell you at the beginning that if you are looking for a nice, sweet, happy movie, this is not the one for you. The kids in the movie are much too smart for that horrible relative that wants their inheritance. Jim Carey has wonderful disguises, voices, accents, etc. Well done. The scenes and circumstances change every few minutes. Vivid backgrounds - homes, ocean, etc. Not boring. This movie also had an unexpected bonus. There is also a director's cut that you can choose at the beginning. He gave inside info about the characters, different scenes, and behind the scenes. Most interesting, from his point of view. A winner.
