This is one of those very important movies that every man woman and child should watch across the entire nation. This is the true story of what women went through simply for the right to vote.

This is an incredible movie. It is a must see for women especially. Very acurate and well done...here is an e-mail I received that convinced me to watch the film... How Women Got To Vote A short history lesson on the privilege of voting... The women were innocent & defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs & their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic'. They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, ... This is an incredible movie. Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining? Recently there was a sparel attended screening of HBO's movie 'Iron Jawed Angels'. It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. All these years later, the actual act of voting has become less personalfor us, more rote. Frankly, voting often feels more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it is inconvenient. My friend, Wendy, who studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said. 'What would those women think of the way I use--or don't use--my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn. The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.' HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies & government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunko night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It i s jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.' Please pass this on to all the women you know

I bought this film because I try to learn everything I can about women in history -- especially women in American history. I have a minor in American history, but it seems the textbooks I read and classes I took left out everything to do with women! I have had to learn it all on my own through the years. This movie is EXCELLENT. I LOVE it! EVERY WOMAN IN AMERICA SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE! IN FACT, EVERY MAN, WOMAN, AND CHILD IN AMERICA SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE! Women should know what the Founding Mothers did for us, so that we can enjoy the rights we have today! Why is it that in the African American struggle, names such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Frederick Douglas are household words, yet names like Alice Paul and Inez Milholland of the women's struggle are forgotten?!!? ... When I see a period piece, I like for the scenes, the clothing, and the music to take me back to that appropriate era and set me there. The modern music was jolting and hard to swallow, but I guess by putting something modern in there, they were trying to show that these women of our great-grandmothers' generation were just like women of today. The second criticism is that there was a bathtub masturbation scene that was inappropriate, not needed, and distracting from the subject at hand --women's struggle for the vote!

If you ever thought the history you were taught was incomplete Iron Jawed Angels will not only show you that it was, but also why. This movie was enthralling and enveloping and had my attention the entire time. It is passionate, but not sappy. It was a very interesting depiction of a side of women's suffrage that has not been presented in mainstream history. It reminds us that the right to vote for women in this democratic nation is still very new and that a tough battle was fought by extremely strong women against stubborn individuals who ... It also shows that fundamentally we are all the same, again no matter which side you are on, and that unless you take the time to listen you might miss the opportunity to really know those who are close to you. Iron Jawed Angels is an important movie for everyone to see because it presents all of the above and so much more in a matter-of-fact, non-threatening way. It will rock your world and the foundation it was built on! It is worth full price!!!

Every one,especially women, should view this excellent movie detailing the incredible struggles and their courage,even being beaten and put in prison.Why ? Because they peacefully demostrated to gain equal voting rights with men. Hillary Swank & Angelica Houston play the lead rolls in this eye opening movie and they do an outstanding job portraying these brave women. I bought this movie because it is important to remember those who came before us and who paved the way for rights we all take for granted today.This is an important historical look at the facts surrounding the fight by women to have the right to vote.
