SANTA FE TRAIL is a western dealing with the pre-Civil War period of Kansas and John Brown's raids. It depicts the battle of Fort Leavenworth, aka "bloody Kansas," during the days leading up to the civil war. Calvary officers are given the duty of capturing abolitionist John Brown (Raymond Massey) and his crew. Errol Flynn plays West Point cadet J. E. B. Stuart, the man assigned to the dangerous mission, along with George Armtrong Custer (Ronald Reagan), and four other friends who also just graduated from West Point.

Where is the history??
I have received below average ratings because I simply have asked why so many historical mistakes are made. I see others' who basically say, "Whoa, Errol Flynn and Ronnie Reagan, what a team! This is a fun movie." They get Execellent or Good ratings. I believe a film can both be historically accurate and a good story. It still goes on today. In "Cinderella Man", James J. Braddock is made out to be a depression-day saint while Maxie Baer is a monster. In fact, Max Baer stayed at the bedside of the man he killed with that man's wife while Braddock demanded a 10% fee of all of Joe Lewis' future earnings to give him a title shot and break the color barrier. The barrier was erected after Johnson won the heavy weight crown early in the century. Johnson was intensely disliked by whites. ... Stuart but makes no pretense of having a southern accent. He is Errol Flynn. What is worse, Ronald Reagan plays George Custer as Ronald Reagen. No charm, pizazz, and the legendary gallantry of Custer. Stuart and Custer didn't go to West Point together but were separated by several years. Custer was the last in his class but since the Civil was breaking out he was given a chance which he took and ran with. This isn't shown at all and Custer is shown as a top notch soldier given special responsibilty at West Piont. They also have James Longstreet and Phillip Sheridan together who were also not at West Point at the same time. If you like or love Errol Flynn, which I do, it is a good movie because he plays himself as a swashbuckler as always. But if you want a sense of the Civil War, avoid this movie. Scott Michael Berger

This is a good historically accurate account of our country pre-Cival War. The acting is acceptable,with a good cast,Errol Flynn,Ronald Reagan & Raymond Massey to mention a few.

Good Movie
I went to the Ronald Reagan Museum and they had photos and info about his motion pictures. The plays George Custer and Errol Flynn as JEB Stuart. Who could resist.
