About this product

Product Information

George Falconer (Colin Firth) feels lost. Not only is he still grieving the death of his longtime companion, Jim (Matthew Goode), but he's also a Brit teaching English at a California college. He's so distraught with heartbreak that he's decided to kill himself, and proceeds to get all his affairs in order while carrying on with what otherwise would be a normal day. He gives an unusually forceful lecture to his class, revealing enough that a perceptive student, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), senses something is wrong with the professor; collects his important financial papers from his bank; buys bullets for a handgun he owns; and makes a visit to his best friend (Julianne Moore). But throughout these methodical preparations, George keeps running into people -- a colleague's daughter, a attractive gay hustler, and the sympathetic Kenny -- who offer him glimpses of why he should stay alive. A SINGLE MAN is the directorial debut of legendary fashion designer Tom Ford.

Super service.

  • Great Performances But Not Quite a Great Movie

Colin Firth plays George Falconer in the title role of this 2009 movie. George is a college English professor in Los Angeles during 1962 when his long term male lover, Jim (Matthew Goode), is suddenly killed in an automobile accident. Through flashbacks, we get to know Jim, the story of their relationship, and why George's grief is so overwhelming that he plans to kill himself. The movie takes us through what would be his final day in this life. Some of his plans work out. He visits his best female friend Charlotte (Julianne Moore) who is also depressed over a husband that abandoned her and a son that has grown up and moved away. He takes his money out of the bank and removes the contents of his safety deposit box. He cleans out his office at school. All of this is pretty mundane. ...

  • "Single" Man Rates On "Multiple" Levels

Clearly "A Single Man" is fashion designer Tom Ford's valentine to art and the gay chasm. Colin Firth is spectacular to watch in his nuanced British role as a gay professor in the 1960's. This is the kind of textured film that the LGBT audience should cue into. It's not a victim movie but a psychological study. Director Ford makes it worth seeing by also making it "nice" to look at. It's a pretty film with a perplexing center. The story is rather lackluster because it toys with the gay character's search for self through suicide after his male lover's death. The way Ford and Firth document the lead's assimilation of grief is quite astounding. An excellent slice of contemporary gay cinema.

  • A Single Man( DVD, 2010)

25/09/10 First-time Director Tom Ford scores a Grand-Slam in his Debut. The details of everything that is Cinema to be set in 1962 is impressive, and Mr. Ford has a great Director of Photography( DP) in Eduard Grau. The Casting is tight and near perfect, and the story flows smoothly. The Leading man of this saga is Colin Firth, and he won the Best Actor in both the Venice Film Festival and BAFTA. Mr. Firth was nominated for the Best Actor for an Oscar from the Academy Awards. Julianne Moore is near-perfect in her role. The backgrounds, locations could not have been better selected. All-in-all, this is an excellent movie. Expect Mr. Ford to churn out more movies like this one for years to come

  • A SINGLE MAN

The best thing I can say about this film is that it’s re-creation of the 1950’s on film was amazing. So, visually it was a real treat. Otherwise, I could not get interested in the story. I felt the performances throughout were wooden and the dialogue obtuse. I also cannot tell you why I stayed with it until the very unsatisfactory ending. If you are homophobic -- give this one a pass. It is a sad movie, centering around planning a suicide. I am sure there was a message (maybe many) in the film but I surely didn’t get them or the point of the film either.
