    Sony DCR-TRV280

    These cameras are no longer manufactured. They shoot in standard definition. If you can get one in good working condition for under $200 go for it. For best quality capture to your computer for editing you need a firewire(IEEE1394) connection. New computers no longer come with firewire, thanks to USB 3.0, so you may need to buy a good working older PC or laptop (such as the HP Elitebook 8540W) and a external hard drive to save the videos. Don't wait to long to transfer those old 8mm videos because time will deteriorate them and the equipment to recover them is passing away. NOTE: This camera will only play back the 1hour Digital8 tapes - NOT older regular 8mm 2hour tapes. The Sony DCR-TRV480 will play back all 8mm video tapes.

    Only use it for playback

    I needed it to playback 15-20 yr-old tapes as my camcorder failed a long time ago. It's not fair to rate the image quality of a Digital 8 camcorder today but, in its time, it was quite good.

    Good throwback sony 8mm

    This camcorder is great. In terms of the 8mm camcorder era, it really has all of the features you need. I almost prefer it over my brand new sony. The only thing I don't like it the placement and access to the tape deck. The ones I used to have in this era had easier access to the tape.
