TRENCHES-BATTLEGROUND-WORLD WAR I
Very good narration and tells the story in an excellant way. It goes into all of the campaigns of all the fronts as well as the main trench warfare in France. Covers the entire war from beginning to end. The hardships were not only in the trenches, but also the number of displaced people that struggled because of the War to end all Wars. Truly things that everyone should see, to get a better grasp of how life was in 1914 to 1919. The coming out of America into the world picture as well as the events that took place from the beginning World War I, make this informative and gives a person time to think about life, as it was in those days. The photography is great and the pictures are in reall time that makes it look like the events happened only a few years ago. Normally WWI film has ... A WW1 DVD SET TO BE THE END ALL OF DVD SETS (or at least a good standard).
This 5 disc sets has motion pictures of many scenes I have never found or viewed before on The Military/History Channel, etc... As a WWI GEEK (have been since 6 years old), I was particularly impressed by much the carnage, that was basically set on the shelves as it was thought by all parties involved in the fighting as too graphic and would brood anti-war sentiment. Given the primitive filming technology at the time, I was still impressed by the willingness of the photographers to basically "get in the middle of fighting." I'm giving this a 5-star rating (which other kneejerk WWI/ WWII historians may mightily disagree), because I have never found a set of moving picture WWI military media that is both broad and detailed in it's depth. Good visual resource
I have watched several of the Great War DVD sets and this, by far, is my favorite. The commentary is neither dry nor boring and is always informative and keeps your interest. There is a good selection of video and still image sources and the history is spot on: no shabby semi-history here. If you are looking merely to expand your knowledge of the Great War and do not have time to read the great book by John Keegan, this DVD set is for you!I have watched several of the Great War DVD sets and this, by far, is my favorite.
