What's Eating Gilbert Grape? by Peter Hedges
I read this book after watching the movie starring a pre-famous Leonardo DiCaprio and a much younger Johnny Depp. The book is written by Peter Hedges about a family with a heap of problems. The main character is a young Gilbert Grape (Depp), forced to work at a local grocery store to support his large, fatherless family. His mom, a long ago town beauty, has ballooned up to 500 plus pounds. The older sister, more like a mother than a sister, a younger sister, newly braces free, and Arnie, his mentally handicapped brother. We watch as his life unfolds before us, as he continues a hot affair with a much older woman, learns to accept his fate in a small town going no where, and finding his true self through an unlikely source! Hilarious writing
Very witty and sarcastic. Easy to read. The movie deviated just a tad from the book. It's an excellent story and great to read. Laugh-out-loud and witty remarks and insights all over the plot.

I had watched the movie...which doesn't really follow the book so much as some books, but it does answer some background questions you may have in watching the movie. I wish Mr. Hedges would write a sequel to this book. Anyway the book helps you to understand family better if you have watched the movie...5 stars on the movie if case anyone wants to know.
