Batfink-a-go-go, baby!
"Your bullets cannot harm me. My wings are like a shield of steel!" Never saw these American-made cartoons when they first came out in the mid-sixties, but when I heard what a big cult hit they've been in England over the decades, I knew I had to take a look, & I'm definitely glad I did. From the makers of "Milton the Monster" & inspired by the success of the live action "Batman" television series, this silly superhero spoof from Hal Seeger Productions is cheaply made with limited animation & only two voice actors for the entire run of the show, but it packed a lot of colourful action & laughs into it's 100 short five minute episodes thanks to clever writing, a nifty sense of design & some of the coolest theme music in all of children's television. The colourfully-costumed title character ... "Your bullets cannot harm me. My wings are like a shield of steel!" The colourfully-costumed title character is a large anthropomorphic bat with an heroic baritone voice (provided by Frank Buxton who did similar duty as Japanese secret agent & self-described "lovable rogue" Phil Moscowitz in Woody Allen's classic comedy "What's Up, Tiger Lily?") who got his great strength & signature 'supersonic sonar-radar' power from being born in an abandoned plutonium mine & his mighty metal wings from a friendly blacksmith when he lost the ones he was born with saving his mother's life. He is aided by his huge & hulking gi-clad oriental sidekick Karate (Len Maxwell) who drives their fin-fendered pink Volkswagen-like 'Battilac' & who is saved from being an offensive racist stereotype by being built like Arnold Schwarzenegger & having a voice that sounds like a cross between Maxwell Smart ("Sorry about that, Batfink!") & Curly Howard of the Three Stooges. Together they're called in via videophone from their secluded split-level cave by the local lisping police chief to fight a variety of wacky villains, although their regular archenemy is the wild-haired Hugo A-Go-Go the "World's Maddest Scientist", a genial little lunatic who constantly talks back to the enthusiastically melodramatic "Rocky & Bullwinkle"-style narrator & invents such goofy gadgets as a robot bride complete with robot mother-in-law. The picture quality is pretty good considering the age & obscurity of the animation involved, & there was only some minor sound problems on only one segment out of a whole hundred. No extras but, hey, did I mention that you're getting ONE HUNDRED cartoons!!! My only problem was that when I took the wafer thin two-sided plastic cases out of the cardboard outer box I discovered that the some of the centre holders had gotten brittle & broken, but luckily the cases were so thin that the discs were kept snuggly held in place during transport & arrived undamaged through the post (going to be a gosh darn devil to find replacements though...). If you love sixties superhero spoofs, "Milton the Monster" & the later British-made "Danger Mouse" (who I can't help thinking may have been more than a little bit inspired by this earlier crime-fighting rodent) you'll get a kick (or should that be a karate chop?) out of "Batfink".

WHAT A SERIES
This series has all the charm of Rocky & Bullwinkle. The characters seem to move the same way as well as the animation looks like something from the School House Rock videos. Very enjoyable series kind of pokes fun at the Batman Franchise. Recommended Highly!

Well, i bought the series because i loved Batfink when i was a child. The DVDs have a very good quality, nice presentation and represent a sweet memory. Thanks for asking.

Batfink Strikes Again on DVD - 40+ years later!
This is a great quality set of DVDs with all 100 episodes of Batfink with his faithful sidekick Karate. A lot of fun memories can be relived from childhood once again. The series was originally created in 1966 and is a safe family favorite for today. A real golden oldie that young and old alike can enjoy.
