    BUGS & SPIDERS

See a bug? Step on it - it must be bad. See a spider? Dangerous, gotta be killed. WRONG! If you are one of these people, get this book for the whole lowdown. A preying mantis is scary looking to some folks but they do tremendous good by devouring insects that are harmful to many plants. (Pick him up and he will turn his head to look at you, something other insects cannot do). Spiders do a lot of good holding down the insect population, and not all spiders are dangerous to humans so it is important to know which ones to avoid. This book shows pictures of all types to help identify them. For example, the black widow, very poisonous, is easily identified by its shiny black body with a line of red dots down its back, but the male's coloring is completely different - and harmless. A ...

  • A good and quick reference guide...great for kids too!

This is a very informative, quick and easy to use reference guide that has good color pictures and wonderful references to many North American insects and spiders. Not every one is listed in here but I found many are. It has been my field guide since I was an older child using my mom's. Without it, I would be very lost as to what kinds of bugs are in my area. I also love it's compact size instead of being a big, bulky, hard to carry around study guide. I haven't found it's equal or better yet. I use mine every year and I think every household should own a copy. A great family resource tool.

  • Awesome book!!

My 11 year old daughter loves all things crawling. She got this book recently and has been pouring over it. We can't wait to go on nature hikes and use this book has a reference for when she finds the unusual insects. Great value too!!

  • What's that?

Not totally inclusive of all insects & spiders, but it is encyclopedic in scope. Wish it had more larvae and/or egg identification content. Thoroughly useful, good photos.

  • Find your bug in the Audobon Field Guide!

All of the Audubon Society field guides are amazing references. I ordered this one because a friend sent me a picture of a moth to identify for her & I realized I didn’t have a good reference guide for insects. I have 3 guides that include insects, but none of them included the moth in question. Upon receiving this guide; it took less than five minutes to make a positive ID of the wooly bear caterpillar moth. That kind of easy to access & comprehensive reference content gets five stars from me every time!
