About this product

Product Information

This historical journey through Naval history starts when the U.S. Frigate "Chesapeake" was attacked and boarded by royal sailors of the H.M.S. Leopard. This act of aggression led president Thomas Jefferson to declare war on June 18, 1812. This video highlights all of the crucial naval battles that our young Navy fought against the then superior British Navy.

  • American History - The War of 1812 (2005, DVD)

This is a simple review of this 'History Channel' boxed set - BUY the 'National Film Board of Canada Release' Version' 'The War of 1812', honestly. The 'History Channel' does a great 9th Grade version of the war, and even dwells on the more 'colourful' parts of the war - 'The Battle of New Orleans' for instance was not that significant in reality, the war was already over ! The National Film Board of Canada release is a much better look at the war, the DVD set covers the War as a subject and not like the History Channel which picks certain parts of the war and discuss them in detriment to the overall picture of the War. So basically, 'thanks History Channel' but really your version is slightly worthy of an ...

  • Learn about America's second war for independence.

When did the war of 1812 actually begin? You may think I've taken leave of my senses! But the sinking of the American vessel Chesapeake, by the British (which was later cited by president John Adams as the causus belli for this war), occurred in 1806. Thus, the war of 1812 actually began, technically, in 1806! Funny, huh? Anyway, this war was pivotal in America's effort to remain a country independent of the U.K. These DVDs provide some great insights into this war, and some interesting, and apparently quite accurate, portrayals of battles. But my preference would have been a somewhat shorter documentary.

  • 1812 Overview DVD Set

This DVD set produced by the History Channel is very informative and is a great tool for young and old alike. There is a chapter that is about the Star Spangled Banner and how it came to be our National Anthem. The attention to detail is amazing. I purchased the item as I like history and also have a couple of teens studying the Civil War and the War of 1812. This helps them see what happened so that they can understand the importance of this great time in history rather than just reading in text books. I would suggest getting this DVD set as well as any additional DVDs made by the History Channel.

  • The War of 1812

I saw this on the history channel and I wanted a copy immediately. I always wanted to understand the war of 1812 and I even learned what the lyrics of the song, The Star Spangled Banner means. I always learned that the White House was burned, but now I understand why and how. I am very happy with my purchase and if you have young ones to teach, this will be a great teaching aide.
