Gambler and con artist Charlie (Walter Matthau) is desperate to meet single, rich ladies with large bank accounts. Much to Herb's chagrin, their accommodations are in the bowels of the high-class ship, and they are forced to work for hilariously tyrannical cruise director Gil Godwyn (Brent Spiner). Herb dutifully dances his way into the heart of a lonely widower, Vivian (Gloria De Haven), pretending he is a doctor while Charlie cons high-stakes gamblers and sets his sights on a much younger oil tycoon, Liz (Dyan Cannon). As Charlie and Herb struggle to keep their real identities a secret, their romances blossom until the truth is revealed and they must act fast to save their newly discovered loves.

Ever since the original pairing of these two actors, they have put out a string of hilarious films! Out to Sea is no different and does not disappoint! It's high comedy, adventure and hijinks on the high seas with an all-star cast that includes Elaine Stritch, Dyan Cannon, Donald O'Connor and more!!

Great movie bad picture
This movie is so funny. I enjoy the work of Jack Lemon and Walter Mathual. Unfortunately, the picture quality is really bad! I feel it was way over priced for what it is. It was marked on the box $1.25 but I payed well over $20s for it. I got kinda rooked on this purchase. It is a great movie but the picture is like poop.

Small-time con man Charlie (Walter Matthau) fast-talks his considerably more straight-laced friend Herb (Jack Lemmon) into joining him for a luxury cruise on an ocean liner headed to the Bahamas. Charlie tells Herb that the trip is free and will be a good way to meet rich widows; both parts are true enough, but Herb doesn't know that Charlie has signed them on as dance hosts (hence the free tickets), and Herb isn't sure if he's ready for romance after the recent death of his wife. This was a very funny, but poignant story of two elderly men who go on a cruise. The first man, Charlie (Walter Matthau) still considers himself young & hip. He is looking for a young, rich woman to marry him so he can live on easy street. He books himself & his friend, ie: his brother-in-law, on a free cruise. He doesn't tell him that they are booked as dance escorts for the ladies on the cruise. The second man, Herb (Jack Lemmon) is in a state of depression. He misses his late wife and is letting life pass him by. He is basically tricked into going on the cruise, not knowing they have to work for their passage. He is suspicious because he isn't getting any straight answers from his friend. On board, Herb finally learns what is expected of him, and buckles down ... But, Charlie is too smart for him. He has tons of excuses and ailments to fall back on. Early on, Herb is assisgned to dance with all the ladies in a certain section of the room. At one of the tables, he meets Vivian (Gloria DeHaven). She is charming and beautiful. She is also a widow who came on the cruise at the insistance of her daughter, who is on her honeymoon. Vivian is also letting life pass her by since her husband died. Things don't go well with the couple at first, mostly because of Charlie. He told Vivian that Herb was a Doctor. Since Herb didn't want to call Charlie a liar, he tries to play along, but things keep going wrong. Vivian thinks Herb is putting her off and trying to push her away, when just the opposite is true. Herb is starting to get interested in living again. Charlie, on the other hand, is charging ahead with his plans to meet and marry a rich younger woman. He first sees Liz (Dyan Cannon) playing poker, and winning. She is dressed to kill, and acting like she is worth millions. She has one of the best cabin suites, as well as enough charm to seduce all of the rich, handsome men on the ship. Charlie doesn't know it, but Liz is looking for a rich man to take care of her. She and her mother spent all of their savings booking the cruise and trying to keep up appearances. I think you can guess the rest. Herb finally tells Vivian the truth. She is upset and decides to leave the cruise. Charlie finds out Liz is a fraud, and tells her he isn't rich either. She decides to leave the cruise. Vivian & Liz charter a plane from an island. Herb & Charlie decide they love them and take a lifeboat to try to find them. The plane is on its last legs, but manages to take off. The men in the lifeboat try to get the attention of the women in the plane. Herb finally fires off a flare to get their attention. The plane lands, they get together, and all live happily ever after. Or so we are to suppose. I do have my concerns for Liz & Charlie. I especially loved this movie because I liked these actors, I love comedies, and I had just recently come from taking a cruise. The ship in the movie is the exact ship I had taken. The MS Westerdam. It was almost like being on board again. Of course, I didn't have the romance like in the movie, and we went to different islands, but I still enjoyed each time they showed the ship!

Walter is always planning something. Together they are a good pair of good actors. I would watch them over and over. They are very good in every movie that i have watched.
