About this product

Product Information

Dive into a colorful and vibrant world with "Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2" for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Distributed by developer Taito Corporation of Japan, this video game had an initial release date of 1991. As the sequel to Bubble Bobble from Taito, this game features more than 32 levels of gameplay on 10 different islands. A unique scoring system allows for regular gameplay as well as the opportunity to reach super-high scores. Offering extensive entertainment, Rainbow Islands for the NES platform is a classic in the arcade genre of games.Set in a fantasy realm, the video game places players in the shoes of Bubby and Bobby. While these characters were seen before as bubble dragons in the original version, they’ve taken human form in Rainbow Islands. These intrepid adventurers are on a mission to rescue their counterparts from the evil villain known as the Dark Shadow, who has rudely turned everyone into bubble dragons. In order to reach the lair of Dark Shadow and return their friends back to human form, Bubby and Bobby must traverse each sinking island as gameplay becomes increasingly difficult and enemies get faster. Along the way, powerful bosses oppose their efforts, and the player must adapt accordingly to the faster-paced action.Gameplay in “Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2” revolves around jumping higher and higher in each level while taking out enemies along the way. If gamers take too long in moving Bubby and Bobby upward through the platforms, water starts to rise from the bottom. Touching the water within an island level results in the loss of a life, so players must be quick in their movements. Opposing the gamer on every island are various enemies that range from insects to vampires, all of which have different strategies and pose specific risks as the player advances. The game provides the characters with the ability to shoot rainbows in order to combat these foes, and each rainbow is also used as a platform from which to jump. It’s important to collect power-ups like red shoes and other items that enhance firepower, health, and maneuverability. A major component of Rainbow Islands involves collecting diamonds and mirrors. If the gamer collects all of these items, the true ending plays out at the end of the game. If they aren’t collected, there are different endings to the game according to how the player acts.“Bubble Bobble 2” is notable for possessing a multitude of secrets that the gamer must search diligently for in order to find. Accumulating points and reaching a high score is a challenging endeavor, and the ever-present danger of rising water on each island keeps players on their toes. Completing the entire game by unlocking all the secrets and bonuses requires high skill on the part of gamers, providing hours of entertainment. “Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2” for the NES is a retro gaming experience with classic graphics that shouldn’t be overlooked by any gaming enthusiast.

    Play it at least once!

This game is certainly original and is worth checking out. This is one of the few 8 bit games where you move up instead of right or left. It's a fun game and I recommend it.

  • Instantly became one of my favorite NES games and I have a vast collection

I got this because I have both bubble bobble and bubble bobble 2 on NES and a friend of mine told me about this game being in the same series. I was expecting an awesome arcade style game and it met my lofty expectations. This game is extremely fun and difficult. I like the little extra quest of collecting the letters RAINBOW in every level which can give you a nice bonus. The gameplay is great, with the character being very responsive to the buttons. The game plays vertically, as you have to go up and up to reach the end of every level. Instead of there being a ghost to come kill you if you take too long on a level, water starts flooding and you have to race it to the top. If you hit the water you die. This is a classic NES game and if you don't have it, there is absolutely no ...

  • Classic Arcade Game

This is just an all around fun game. It seems to be too easy at first, then it sneaks up on you a BAM. Who would of thought a 20 year old game would be that much fun in 2008!!
