Poor quality control
For me it was a straight choice between the iOptron and the Star adventurer with astro pack. I suspect I made the wrong choice or more accurately I made the choice without knowing something very key .... The Quality Control on the Chinese manufacture and assembly of the Star adventurer is questionable. It was during the journey of trying to sort out all the problems that I discovered many other people experienced the exact same , not everyone , which points to QC. This makes a purchase a bit of a lottery. Here are the issues : 1) inside the main clutch there are 4 set screws that should be aligned with holes during assembly , many users are discovering that they aren’t aligned , this results in them scraping around the clutch housing digging a gouge and depositing swarf ( Metal pieces ) ... Here are the issues : 1) inside the main clutch there are 4 set screws that should be aligned with holes during assembly , many users are discovering that they aren’t aligned , this results in them scraping around the clutch housing digging a gouge and depositing swarf ( Metal pieces ) into the worm gear and clutch. The solution is either dismantle the whole assembly and rebuild ( needs grease ) or send back for repacement which has a good chance of having the exact same problem 2) the clutch paper is likely to have grease in it during assembly making the clutch friction variable. Not a major issue in itself , just means having to lock the clutch tighter but this makes it very difficult to undo 3) the adjustment set screw for the worm gear is likely installed too tightly , basically it adjusts the amount of play in the worm gear which translates to the amount of wobble in the telescope /camera. If too tight it stops the rotation from being smooth , basically the rotation gets stuck at places. It’s an easy fix , get an Allen key and adjust it correctly. However .... 4) you may find you can’t get the adjustment screw mentioned in 3) to find the balance point. This means you need to dismantle the case and adjust inside. 5) the battery holder seems to be made out of tolerance , once you get the AA batteries into it you will NOT be able to get the outer batteries out again without using a screwdriver / flat edge / knife to lever them out 6) the dovetail mount betweenbthe main unit and the Astro base ( elevation mount ) is way way out of tolerance , I had to slide a zip tie into the gap to achieve a rigid connection 7) the counterweight does not tighten securely onto the shaft however it’s probably not an issue because ... 8) the counterweight is almost certainly not going to be heavy enough even when at end of shaft. You will need to improvise additional weights. Door stops and castor wheels work but you can get very creative ! 9) the declination mount is virtually useless , it is near impossible to get a sufficient grip on anything you attach to the mount , therefore it will rotate. Heart stopping when it’s your camera rig ! 10) the elevation mount is flexible which means that even when you have worked your way through all of the above you will still find that your camera or scope will vibrate. This one I didn’t find a fix for 11) the polarscope cover isn’t quite the right size and you will hear scratching as the gear rotated and something rubs against the cover. I just removed the cover Would I buy one again ? It depends on whether the iOptron doesn’t have QC issues. I don’t have one so don’t know. Now that I’ve finally coaxed the Star adventurer into working reasonably well I’ll stick with it.

Very Sturdy, Very Easy to use and set up. From a recommendation online, I bought this for the base to use with their competitor, Starguider Pro. iOptron (Starguider) has a great main unit, but their base can be difficult to set up. So buy the Starguider Pro, with the Sky-watcher base..... Best from both. Used to photograph the stars at night. The main unit must be pointed at the North Star. Main unit rotates with the movement of the earth. This allows you to keep the shutter open for long periods of time, to get awesome picture without the stars blurring..... Sky-Watcher base is the easiest base, able to aim at the North Star, with ease. Aim, lock it in... Turn on Main unit. Set shutter speeds.Very Sturdy, Very Easy to use and set up.
