About this product

Product Information

The Last Tycoon, edited by the preeminent Fitzgerald scholar Matthew J. Bruccoli, is a restoration of the author's phrases, words, and images that were excised from the 1940 edition, giving new luster to an unfinished literary masterpiece. It is the story of the young Hollywood mogul Monroe Stahr, who was inspired by the life of boy-genius Irving Thalberg, and is an exposé of the studio system in its heyday. The Last Tycoon is now available for the first time in paperback.

  • Superb, Unfinished Novel About Hollywood

The Love of the Last Tycoon, also called The Last Tycoon, is an excellent novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Informed by Fitzgerald's time in Hollywood as a screenwriter, this novel is about a film producer, Monroe Stahr, who is modelled after the legendary Irving Thalberg. Stahr is my favorite Fitzgerald character. He draws you in and impresses you with his abilities but remains a troubled and innately sad person. Fitzgerald died before completing The Last Tycoon, but the remainder of the story has been filled in by scholar Matthew J. Bruccoli using the author's notes. The novel suffers slightly from being unfinished by Fitzgerald, but it shows potential to have been one of his greatest works. If you are interested in Hollywood during the studio-system era or are a fan of Fitzgerald, you ...
