***MINIMAL SPOILERS*** Famed and revered French Director Robert Bresson captured one of the first great Prison escape movies in 1956. French Resistance man Andre Devigny is imprisoned by the Nazis, then sentenced to death. Every day, Devigny plots and plans his escape piece by piece, by the most minor of movements and displacements of what he has to work with. Prison escape as a Test of Faith
Only Robert Bresson could make a World War II POW escape movie into a religious experience. This movies pares down the escape to the details - it goes methodically through not just nuts and bolts of the escape but also the doubts, fears, mistrusts and ultimately the determination of the protagonist. This movie has an extraordinary power.
