About this product

Product Information

Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero has players racing the highways of Tokyo to become king of the midnight road. As developer Genki's third entry in the underground world of Japanese street racing, Xtreme Racer Zero makes its PlayStation 2 debut by utilizing the extra power offered by the system in an attempt to improve the gameplay and scope of its midnight racing predecessors.

In the world of Tokyo Xtreme Racer, dark highways are ruled by gangs in command of modified cars. With names like Twister, Top Level, and Driving Force, the gangs all bow to the superiority of the one group who rules the night: The Thirteen Devils. The player belongs to no such group, and drives simply for the thrill of victory. The goals are to improve one's car, beat the gangs on their home turf, and show the Thirteen Devils who is the true king of the road.

Genki has re-created over 100 miles of authentic Tokyo highway for realism. Over 100 cars are also available and, although they possess generic names, they all bear more than a passing resemblance to real cars, both domestic and import. Cars can be purchased and upgraded using money earned from winning races. Players can drop in a new engine or transmission, or use the money to buy trim parts like spoilers, hoods, fenders, and the like. A car's fine-tuning can be adjusted in the areas of gear ratios, turbo power, and other minutia.

The heart of Tokyo Xtreme Racer is the Quest mode, which is different from other racing games in that there are no traditional start or finish lines. Instead, players challenge rival cars by flickering their headlights before racing them on the highway. Each car has a power bar as in a fighting game. The second place car gradually loses power, and both cars can lose power by slamming into walls, other cars, or each other. The first car to have its power drained loses the race.

In addition to the Quest mode, the game offers a Time Attack mode, a Free Run, and a Quick Race that takes players right into the action. There is also a Versus mode where players can challenge a friend, choosing between an assortment of modified cars and then flooring the pedal to determine the most "Xtreme" driver.

Man Ive missed this game so much!

Super fun game, you race the GPU randomly and win money to boost your car then go back to the streets of Tokyo and Race again. I had this game back in 2004 but sold it along with a few other games to GameStop in 2005 to buy my new born Twin babies some Diapers and Formula when I was low on cash. I felt so bad to get rid of my games that I liked a lot but my kids came first, finally in April 2017 I was able to start buying all my favorite games back for my ps2, and N64, some for a fraction of the original price and others for the same price as new or Ludicrous price lol! Anyways the only thing I kept with me since the ps2 came out was the my memory card with all my saved game titles. Now I can get back on my 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R in the game and go crazy!

    Great gracing game. Very challenging

The disc is a bit scratched, but it still works great so far. It also if would've been nice if I got the game in its actual case instead of a generic case.

  • For authentic street racing, accept no substitutes.

Tokyo Extreme Racer: Zero is an excellent street racing game. It feels more like an arcade racer, especially if you hook up a racing wheel and sit a few feet from your television screen. The game is different from most of the other tuner racing games out there in that you drive your car around a loop of highways in Tokyo. As you drive around, you come up on other tuner cars. To challenge another racer, you must flash your headlights at them, where then a count-down timer shows up and the race begins. Then, as you race, there are two bars on the top of the screen, indicating both your's and your opponent's 'health'. It makes it seem like a fighting game, which helps separate itself from the rest of trash out there. The game starts out kinda slow, but as you make your way through ...

  • Good nostalgic fun!

I love this game. Throws me right back to my teen years. A JDM RPG is how I would describe it.

  • Overlooked

This game is easily overlooked as one of the best ps2 racing games of its generation rolling start races and very customizable i got this game when it first came out never regretted buying it was one of my favorites if your into real jdm style racing games this is for you not as overrated as nfs underground 1&2 thats what makes this game so special it was way before its time and ovwrlooked as a not so good game and got bad ratings by game reviews but its definitely a true ps2 classic and must have games for any collector and real import racing fan
