About this product

Product Information

A true 20th-century classic: Faulkner's famed harrowing account of the Bundren family's odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother. As I Lay Dying is one of the most influential novels in American fiction in structure, style, and drama. Narrated in turn by each of the family members, including Addie herself as well as others, the novel ranges in mood from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. "I set out deliberately to write a tour-de-force. Before I ever put pen to paper and set down the first word I knew what the last word would be and almost where the last period would fall." --William Faulkner on As I Lay Dying This edition reproduces the corrected text of As I Lay Dying as established in 1985 by Noel Polk.

Reviews
"He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of our classics." --Ralph Ellison   "No man ever put more of his heart and soul into the written word than did William Faulkner. If you want to know all you can about that heart and soul, the fiction where he put it is still right there." --Eudora Welty, "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." --Robert Penn Warren From the Hardcover edition., "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Interesting somewhat quirky story...you won't forget it!

Interesting story...purchased after hearing a review of this classic and wondering how I missed reading it in school. I appreciate it now than I would have when I was younger.

  • As I Lay Dying

The style of narration is a little difficult to get used to. Faulkner uses first-person narration, but jumps from one character to another. Overall, this is helpful in putting the full story together, but it is a little off-putting at first. The actual story is fairly good and takes the reader through a range of emotions. There are several incidents that can viewed as either funny, scary, or heart-wrenching, depending on who is telling the story. Very interesting read overall.

  • Great quality.

I haven't started reading it yet but the quality of the book is great. I'm still reading Moby Dick.

  • Average

I had to buy this book for an assignment in my class. It is unlike any other novel I have ever read. Usually a novel only offers a viewpoint from one or two characters, but in this novel, every character's viewpoint is represented. Sometimes this takes away from the progression of the novel and the reader feels like they are trapped in the same scene four or five times, but it expands the simple thought of a one sided viewpoint. It would be inaccurate to say that the reader gets lost in the story, but the novel does have some points that have a drastic change overall depending on what chapter is being read.

  • Well worth reading

This book was really good. I like the writing style of Faulkner and reading this book made it easy for me to understand why it was required in my English class. I purchased this book for a college course and we were assigned excerpts from the book but the story was one that pulls you in so I ended up reading the entire book and found it to be a very enjoyable experience.
