Subversive, Fun and Educational?
I first saw this film years ago, and have been waiting for a DVD release; but sadly it doesn't look like it will get one. So if you still view VHS then this will have to do. An exceptional film by director Ken Russell. This film subverts religion in a similar way that "Altered States" subverted science. Russell's plot devices and bizarre/non-traditional imagery are used to great effect. Based on actual events, but with artistic license in the interpretation; it is historic and satiric... and great fun. Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave are a thrill to watch.
