A Blessed Company reconstructs everyday Anglican religious practice and experience in Virginia from the end of the seventeenth century to the start of the American Revolution. Challenging previous characterizations of the colonial Anglican establishment as weak, John Nelson reveals the fundamental role the church played in the political, social, and economic as well as spiritual lives of its parishioners.

This magisterial book reveals the Anglican Church in Virginia as institutional, professional, spiritual, and communal. (Robert M. Calhoon, author ofDominion and Liberty: Ideology in the Anglo-American World, 1660-1801), In this impressively researched study, John Nelson explains more thoroughly than any previous work has done the process by which the established church in early Virginia adapted to circumstances in the colony and thereby developed an institutional structure for the Anglican Church that differed in important respects from that in England. • Great book - fascinating subject

As an Anglican Catholic priest in 21st century Virginia, I was overjoyed to receive this book about those who, in colonial Virginia, held to the 'faith once received.' John K. Nelson, professor emeritus of history at UNC Chapel Hill, has written a first-class account of the men who labored in the vineyards of 18th century Virginia parishes. The extensive footnotes and the biographical directory of these priests adds to the value of the book. Highly recommended to all who care about traditional Anglicanism in a time when it is being challenged by revisionists.
