    Joan Crawford plays herself

As Eva, matriarch of a wealthy Southern family, Joan Crawford essentially plays herself. Eva is glamorous, youth-obsessed, selfish, controlling, and maritally unfaithful. Early in the film, Eva seems to say and do hurtful things to her family, even when she derives no benefit from it; she has no apparent motivation other than to be mean. Her husband is a bitter alcoholic who stays in his room, rarely interacting with the family. When the film is almost over, there's a brilliant twist that makes you wonder which came first, Eva's antisocial behavior or her husband's? Is Eva evil or, as she says, merely lonely? Although most of the characters are unlikable, they are believable. Recommended for fans --- and foes --- of Joan Crawford, as well as fans of Gothics and film noir.

  • Joan Crawford Delivers Playing Herself

Joan Crawford plays the title role of Queen Bee Eva Phillips. Literally, Eva rules the roost. She robbed her so-called friend Sue Mc Kinnon of her fiance, had numerous affairs, and hated her sister-in-law Carol (Betsy Palmer). But we don't know this at first, as we first see her through the eyes of her innocent cousin, Jennifer Stewart (Lucy Marlow), who is visiting for the first time from Chicago. And Eva treats Carol royally--sets up dates for her, wraps her in mink, and encourages her shy nature. Jennifer doesn't understand why Eva's husband Avery (Barry Sullivan) drinks heavily, why her little son Ted has nightmares, and why Sue Mc Kinnon acts like a robot. Little by little the truth surfaces until all of us see her as she is. While dressed like a queen, we ...

  • "Queen Bee" Everyone kowtow to Joan!

I love this movie. It's not a classic, but it's entertaining beyond words. Joan rules the roost here, and everyone is consistantly terrified of her throughout the movie. For NO REASON. That's why I love watching this film. IMHO, it never grows old.
