About this product

Product Information

This set contains two classic horror films from producer Val Lewton. The first of several interesting horror films by producer Val Lewton, CAT PEOPLE was innovative in its style. Joining Lewton's artistic sense and mastery of atmosphere with Jacques Tourneur's directing talent, the film created fear in its audience precisely by not showing too much. This restraint and emphasis on psychological tension rather than physical violence would go on to influence later horror directors. While the story at the heart of the film is rather odd, it is told in a very eloquent and effective manner. Irena Dubrovna (Simone Simon) is a young, Serbian artist living in New York City. When she meets Oliver Reed (Kent Smith), a somewhat bland American, she falls in love and gets married. But their marriage hits the rocks when she becomes consumed with the belief that she is the victim of a curse. According to Irena, the curse will make her turn into a deadly panther the minute she becomes emotionally aroused. In an effort to fix their problems, Oliver seeks psychiatric counseling for his beautiful and tormented young bride. But talking about her problems may only make them worse. CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE: In this excellent, eerie sequel to Jacques Tourneur's CAT PEOPLE, a widower, Oliver Reed (Kent Smith), the father of the introverted six-year-old Amy (Ann Carter) remarries. Lonely and curious, Amy begins to explore her late mother's life and discovers her maternal bloodline is cursed. In her dreams she visits her alluring but devilish mother (Simone Simon) and learns her people become panthers when their blood is aroused. In addition Amy makes friends with Julia (Julia Dean), an elderly actress who lives in a spooky old Victorian next door, and begins competing for her affection with Julia's real daughter, Barbara (Elizabeth Russell). Director Robert Wise's debut (codirected with Gunther von Fritsch) concentrates on childhood fantasy more than suspense and horror. A haunting film nonetheless, CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, with its ethereal dream sequences, is beautifully chilling.

The package was sent securely to prevent damage to the contents. This set was sent to me in its CORRECT form. Twice prior, both returned to sellers, one of the ends of the soft DVD 'slip-cover' (it is not a DVD case) were cut/sliced with scissors so it would open book-style. Thank you for sending me item AS intended. The DVDs are pulled from the top/bottom. As described in terms of condition. EXCELLENT customer service in all aspects. TY. Def do biz again. A+++

Item arrived just as described and what I had hoped for…brand new. Well packed in bubble envelope. Shipping time was a little disappointing but I don’t think that was the seller’s fault since the tracking showed it was on its way the day after I ordered it. This is why I took off a star for shipping cost. On the whole it was a good transaction and I am very pleased. I would definitely do business with this seller again. Thank you Alberts Treasure Store!

Item came just as described, if not better. I was extremely impressed with the shipping speed and protection. The box explicitly said "do not bend" (I bought a comic). I will definitely be buying from this seller again.

    Slinky Simone

Compared against the 1982 remake with Nastassia Kinski, the original "Cat People" may seem like slow going, but once you acclimate to it's slinky pace and noir style, it more than holds its own, and in fact is a much more even and consistent film than its spawn (in which gorgeous art direction, and Kinski's haunting presence, were both undermined by gratuitous gore and gross-out gimmickry). The 1942 film is presented here in a pristine transfer complete with subtitles and good DVD extras that include a phone-in commentary by the Cat Woman herself, Simone Simon! She rightly regards the film as a treasure. The film is well-cast, well filmed and beautifully lit, with a couple of avant grade sequences and effects (I don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave them as a surprise). It's almost ...

  • 2 of Golden Era Hollywood's Most Subtly Scary Movies for the Price of 1.

The DVD containing the 1940's double feature CAT PEOPLE along with THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE I purchased through EBAY is a MINT PRINT of two classics. Why they're classics may be a little harder to explain than it seems it should be. Perhaps the answer lies in the realization that these are movies through which the excellent acting, almost understated set design and location(either in glowing golden sunlight or shimmering darkness or well-lit rooms that ought to be safe pleasent places...) the viewer is constantly being confronted with the fact that the supernatural dilemma facing the characters is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg(or claw) in what appears to be wrong - or right - with some of their lives... That's what I remembered liking about both these ...

  • Engrossing original with a lighter sequel.

The Cat People is an engrossing film with imaging that leads you through the film to its fateful ending. Curse of the Cat People re-unites the characters in a fantasifull way through the heroines interaction with an introverted child. Not as engrossing as the original but still entertaining.

  • Not really a Sequel

Cat People was done by Val Lewton, who headed the B unit of RKO and was tasked with turning out second features for the Saturday Audiences. With limited budgets, he managed to create a group of amazing and artful thrillers which are today, considered masterpieces of the genre. Cat People does a great deal with very little. It is mostly suggestion rather than the obvious gore which is common today and yet it leaves one with a strong disquiet. Lewton wanted to do a film about a little girl's dream world but knew that the studio wanted "Horror" type films, so he cleverly used elements from Cat People and gave it a title to suggest a sequel. While the "ghost" of Simone Simone inhabits the film, it is reassuring rather than horrific. The studio marketed it as a true horror film with artwork ...

  • Cat People / Curse fo the Cat People

These are films you can watch and enjoy many times over. The filming technique is typical of the 1940s where the director uses shadows and odd lighting to achieve a dramatic effect. The stories of both films are strong and believeable, and the acting is above par. Bottom line, classic films, wonderful acting, great storyline and you'll fall in love with Simone Simon in the first few minutes of the film.
