About this product

Product Information

Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize From the award-winning and bestselling author of Directorate S , the explosive first-hand account of America's secret history in Afghanistan To what extent did America's best intelligence analysts grasp the rising thread of Islamist radicalism? Who tried to stop bin Laden and why did they fail? Comprehensively and for the first time, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Steve Coll recounts the history of the covert wars in Afghanistan that fueled Islamic militancy and sowed the seeds of the September 11 attacks. Based on scrupulous research and firsthand accounts by key government, intelligence, and military personnel both foreign and American, Ghost Wars details the secret history of the CIA's role in Afghanistan (including its covert operations against Soviet troops from 1979 to 1989), the rise of the Taliban, the emergence of bin Laden, and the failed efforts by U.S. forces to find and assassinate bin Laden in Afghanistan.

Outstanding, detailed look at pre-911 US foreign policy

I am four chapters in and this is a really amazing book. It is incredibly detailed and provided a lot of insight into the Islamic world leading up to 9/11, such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Afghanistan. It also underscores that the American people do not have control over their own government and the United States intelligence agencies do what they want.

  • Detailed history of US/Middle East involvement

This book is a very scholarly approach to the US and the conflicts in the Middle East. Provides detailed information on the long history of US involvement in Afghanistan. Tons of data on people, places, politicians and hidden agendas. Makes the connections from the war on terror to the Soviet Union and the Cold War, as well as Bin Laden and the spawning of Al Qaeda. Great inside information and political analyses on a topic that affects all of us one way or another. ***Highly recommend his biography of the Bin Laden clan as well. I originally bought Ghost Wars but then found the Bin Laden book and read it first. Very educational and intriguing. "The Bin Ladens" should be picked up along with this publication.

  • Reads like a spy novel, but loaded with facts

This book is thick and extensively researched, with a good deal being original research from the author through interviews and archive digging. However, don't be daunted. It's written in a narrative, novel-like fashion that makes it entertaining and goes by pretty quick. It deals heavily with the mistakes of the CIA in its dealings with the middle east, especially Afghanistan. Although you will not find an expose here directly linking the CIA to the Taliban or Osama Bin Laden, you are shown how the actions and policies of US national interests gave rise to both. About 1/4 of the book is notes and references, but it is well worth reading through both for any serious pundit or those with an interest in contemporary global issues.

  • great read
