About this product

Product Information

Jean Rhys's reputation was made upon the publication of this passionate and heartbreaking novel, in which she brings into the light one of fiction's most mysterious characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. Set in the Caribbean, its heroine is Antoinette Cosway, a sensual and protected young woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Rochester. In this best-selling novel, Rhys portrays a society so driven by hatred, so skewed in its sexual relations, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind.

It has an almost hallucinatory quality., The novel is a triumph of atmosphere--of what one is tempted to call Caribbean Gothic atmosphere...It has an almost hallucinatory quality., Working a stylistic range from moody introspection to formal elegance, Miss Rhys has us traveling under Antoinette's skin. It is an eerie and memorable trip.

  • Good, but confusing

I had to read this book for my english literature class. It was a very good story, but a difficult read. The speaker changes frequently and there is no clear mention of who is actually speaking at any given time. You have to figure out who is speaking based one what they are saying. Sometimes you're not sure who is speaking to who or who is narrating the story. This book requires a lot of deciphering to figure out what is going on. It's easy to misunderstand because of this and all of the symbolism. Some characters have more than one name, while other characters' names aren't even mentioned at all. Personally, it was confusingly written and I did not care for the writing style in the least. To make it even worse, one of the narrators is an insane woman, so you're not sure how to ...

  • You can smell the ocean when you read this story.

Hauntingly beautiful saga, written so eloquently. Without over-dramatizing the heartbreak of so many lives affected by slavery and its demise, Rhys opens the reader's eyes to the fragility of life for white people during this time and in this place.

  • A classic

Rhys' book was a classic at its time. Made into a movie. Good read. Dated style.

  • Wide Sargasso Sea

Bought this book to review with my literary group and loved it. It was fun to review Jane Eyre along with it for reference. Beautiful, colorful. And some good conversation was born from it's pages. The book itself was as described and arrived promptly.
