About this product

Product Information

"A book that became a cultural touchstone." -- The New Yorker Elizabeth Wurtzel writes with her finger in the faint pulse of an overdiagnosed generation whose ruling icons are Kurt Cobain, Xanax, and pierced tongues. In this famous memoir of her bouts with depression and skirmishes with drugs, Prozac Nation is a witty and sharp account of the psychopharmacology of an era for readers of Girl, Interrupted and Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar .

Reviews
"Wrenching and comical, self-indulgent and self-aware, Prozac Nation possesses the raw candor of Joan Didion's essays, the irritating emotional exhibitionism of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar , and the wry, dark humor of a Bob Dylan song."-- The New York Times "[Wurtzel] is smart, she is funny...she is thoughtful and...she is very, very brave. Wurtzel portrays, from the inside out, an emotional life perpetually spent outrunning the relentless pursuit of what she describes as a black wave, often sacrificing her likability on the altar of her truth."-- Vanity Fair "A very important book, particularly to the countless number of people who aren't sure what's wrong with them but are suffering from the negative thinking, erratic behavior, and dark moods associated with clinical depression. A powerful self-portrait...well worth reading"-- San Francisco Bay Guardian "The saddest, funniest, and ultimately, most triumphant book about youthful depression I've come across. It reads like a mixture of J.D. Salinger and Sylvia Plath, with some Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen thrown in for good measure...[Wurtzel] is one canny and entertaining observer of her generation: if you've been wondering why Kurt Cobain meant what he did--what it feels like to be young, gifted, and black of spirit--this book is the CD, tape, video, and literary answer all in one."--Daphne Merkin, author of Enchantment "A very good book, maybe even an important one, and the pain and despair Wurtzel describes are as real as they are excruciatingly rendered."-- Mademoiselle, "Wrenching and comical, self-indulgent and self-aware, Prozac Nation possesses the raw candor of Joan Didion's essays, the irritating emotional exhibitionism of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar , and the wry, dark humor of a Bob Dylan song."- The New York Times "Wurtzel is a very entertaining nut case. Reading this book is like being locked up with her, covering your ears or laughing out loud, depending on your perspective. Prozac Nation gives a view of every aspect of depression: the self-pity, the courage, the flashes of insight, the despair, and the endless, very moving struggle, simply, to live." - Jeffrey Eugenides "[Wurtzel] is smart, she is funny...she is thoughtful and...she is very, very brave. I bought this book because it was referred to me from a friend. It was much more interesting than I thought and relatable at some points. Made me feel like if times get rough, they are not near as rough as this girl had it. I enjoyed the reading and it helped me through hard times. Plus, it was good to read when I couldn't go back to sleep in the middle of the night. It's not that it made me tired, but it was interesting and calming. This poor girl went through so much, makes me feel sorry for her and thankful that my life is not that way. The buying experience was fine, except at the end of my purchase, there was some sort of security alert that would not go away unless I accepted it and paid. The site was not a secure site either so I was a little uncomfortable with that. I didn't ...

  • Very fitting title, and cover art says so much.

This is one of my all time favorite books, I had a copy once before but lost it moving and just HAD to replace it. Anyone who has suffered from severe depression, bi polar, borderline personality disorder or a multitude of mental illnesses can really relate to this book. It is a true look into the mind, thoughts and feelings of a young woman who is depressed among other things. It is a true story about Elizabeth Wurtzel's life and struggles to try and over come these things. The movie was alright but the book goes into so much more detail and gives more insight into the psyche of someone who feels like they're crazy. She talks about the things she thinks about, the things she does and the reasoning or lack there of for doing them. I think this is a book that even people who have not ...

  • It's an interesting thing to say, but I enjoyed reading Prozac Nation!

I really loved this book. From the minute I started reading I did not want to put it down. I am in a "mental health" reading club and have read many books about depression. This was extremely well done and I'm so glad to have read it.

Wow! Eliabeth really struggled! It was awesome to see what a difference prozac made for her just when she was about ready to give up. A good read. Hope to see the movie soon.
