About this product

Product Information

This landmark film from silent director D.W. Griffith was the first movie blockbuster. However, it also reveals a horribly racist version of American history. The first part of the film chronicles the Civil War as experienced through the eyes of two families; the Stonemans from the North, and the Camerons of the South. Lifelong friends, they become divided by the Mason-Dixon line, with tragic results. Large-scale battle sequences and meticulous historical details culminate with a staged re-creation of Lincoln's assassination. The second half of the film chronicles the Reconstruction, as Congressman Austin Stoneman (Ralph Lewis) puts evil Silas Lynch (George Siegmann) in charge of the liberated slaves at the Cameron hometown of Piedmont. Armed with the right to vote, the freed slaves cause all sorts of trouble until Ben Cameron (Henry B. Walthall) founds the Ku Klux Klan and restores order and "decency" to the troubled land. While THE BIRTH OF A NATION was a major step forward in the history of filmmaking, it must be noted that the film supports a racist worldview. But there is no denying that it remains a groundbreaking achievement, setting a high watermark for film as an art form.

Fast Shipping. Disc arrived in condition described. Had concerns over why there was no case and just disc and cover sleeve. Seller was responsive and answered my questions. However, was still not able to view original picture and description for myself. Also believe seller should have taken pictures of disc and contents instead of using stock photo which was a little misleading.

The description clearly stated that the DVD did not come with hard case and would be arriving with original artwork in a Discsox sleeve. Buyer paid promptly, but seemed confused as to which item they purchased.

  • A look at innovation in film making and a sad point of view.

History, not just the movie, but the thinking behind the movie. President Woodrow Wilson, who was from Virginia, thought it was wonderful. He, also allow the firing of all southern blacks from the Post Office service during his term in office. This movie was a top grossing film for its time and Griffith was very upset that people called him raciest for its content. Griffith was honored for his innovation in film making.

  • Great recruiting film for the Klan.

This is unlike anything I've seen before. Great cinematography, frightening message. Racism from another age. Fascinating and repulsive at once. Not for the easily offended.

  • Re-birth of Griffith's Nation

This DVD presentation of D. W.'s epic is fascinating and full of information and extras. Seeing a film of D.W. talking about the film and his family ties to the Civil War is revealing and worth the price of the set. I wish they could have gotten a African American historian to put it all in context of that day. The U.S. was still very wounded by the war and reconstruction. It seems that today all civil rights history begins with MLK. Until this DVD, I didn't know that the NAACP has been around for a very long time. Film and history buffs alike with really be glad to have this set in their film library.

  • Interesting Piece

This movie is something you'll most likely enjoy. It's a fairly accurate piece based on America's real history. It shows the realistic KKK, racism's improvements, and even a great reinactment of Lincoln's assaination. I really enjoyed watching this and it can almost be compared to Roots. Thanks For Reading, And I Hope I Helped, Justin
