About this product

Product Information

Based on Colleen McCullough's book, this is the Emmy-winning story of forbidden love. Over the course of four decades, a friendship between a boy and a girl turns sultry and stormy as they mature into adults. The boy becomes a priest and the girl becomes a wife. While Father Ralph is a model of piety, Meggie Cleary is a mother with a family. Though they have separate devotions--God for Father Ralph, a husband for Meggie--their unspoken allegiance is to each other. Will the twosome's longings overpower their better judgment? Or will they give in to their forbidden passions and risk destroying the lives around them and quite possibly their own?

Richard Chameberlain delivers a tremendously touching story of the birds in the title. Exactly foreshadows his relationship with little Maggie charact

The photography is gorgeous. Even if the plot doesn't appeal, you get a wonderful journey around the globe.

  • What a beautiful story definitely character driven.

I was a fan of the movie when it came out on television almost 40 yrs ago. The DVD quality is perfect. You will not be disappointed in viewing this beautiful story. Such a classic. I have converted the movie to MP4 to watch on my smart tv on a thumb drive. You can put it on an SD card for your tablets and also transfer the movie to your phone.

  • The Thorn Birds, dvd

For many years The Thorn Birds has been a favorite: I have just reread the book; I own a copy of the movie on cassette tape; and now a copy on DVD, which I just viewed. A beautiful story and most enjoyable.

  • The Thorn Birds (2004, DVD)

The second most-watched miniseries (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough aunt), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare ...

  • Epic Love Story

This is a movie about a priest who falls from grace by loving a young girl and allowing his love to follow her all her life. It shows how far a priest can fall, and how love often does not transcend all to make a happily ever after scenario. The acting is superb and the scenery is rich and beautiful, as Australia is often portrayed. This is an oldie but a goodie, and if you love Richard Chamberlain, this is a must see. The DVD was made in 2004, but the mini series is much older.
