About this product

Product Information

A classic Western regarded by many as the best of the genre, John Ford's THE SEARCHERS has been acknowledged by several directors who came into their own in the 1970s, including Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Paul Schrader, and George Lucas, as a powerful influence on their work. The film stars John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a case-hardened Civil War veteran returning to his brother Aaron's (Walter Coy) Texas home in 1868. When Rev. Samuel Johnson Clayton (Ward Bond) arrives to raise a posse to run down the Comanche who have stolen the cattle of neighbor Lars Jorgenson (John Qualen), Ethan is among those who join him. They return to find the Edwards family slaughtered and the two girls, Lucy (Pippa Scott) and Debbie (Natalie Wood), missing. The posse continues to search for the girls but turns back as winter settles in. However, Ethan and his reluctantly accepted companion, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), the girls' part-Cherokee stepbrother, press on for another seven years, with the Indian-hating veteran becoming ever more fanatical as the hard seasons pass. In his epic meditation on racism, obsession, paranoia, and the myth of the West, Ford explores the ugly underside of a genre that he had imbued with optimism in his early career. Wayne gives perhaps his most powerful performance as the embittered Edwards, but it's the visual poetry of what are possibly Ford's most carefully framed, lit, and composed images that shape this masterwork from beginning to end. As Wayne walks through the doorway at the film's end, he grabs his elbow in a tribute to his and Ford's close friend Harry Carey Sr., a Western film icon who had passed away a few years before.

  • A great classic Ford-Wayne production.

The creative skills of both John Ford as director and John Wayne as actor come through in this technicolor movie treat. Many critics comment about the stereo typing and the view on native Americans that this movie portrays. Whether we like it or now it is part of our history. John Wayne portrays Ethan Edwards a man conflicted with what happens to family members in the hands of what were a savage band of a FEW native Americans. There are always better and worse people on both sides of issues. The characters in this movie are more true to life than most like to admit. They are complex combinations of conflict, love, hate, greed, compassion, and all things that make up a human being. They are all struggling to make the best decisions at any particular time while still being influenced by ...

  • The Searchers in HD

Barring the misunderstanding about the need for a HD DVD player to play this film we find the film to be a classic JW film. My family has enjoyed JW films together for 15 years. The Searchers blends John Wayne's rough and rugged persona with a man determined to find the young family members stollen in an indian raid. There are moments of harsh reality and comic relief. Compassion wins in the end and a family is reunited only to face the healing that will, most probably, never take place. The contrast in leading rolls and the sentamentality that is earned during the story line are unforgetable.

  • JW at his best...

What can be said about this classic that hasn't already been said. An evening of viewing this dvd along with John Wayne's 'Red River' (in black and white of course) is a great night of movie watching.

  • The Searchers

Excellent movie, one of John waynes's best acting I've seen so far!!!!! Scar Face could have been played by a real indian but in those days they chose to pick white actors to play indian chiefs.
