The first of three prequels to George Lucas's celebrated STAR WARS films, EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE is set some 30 years before the original STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE in the era of the Republic. Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by the young but wise Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), is being threatened by the corrupt Trade Federation, puppets of an evil Sith lord and his terrifying apprentice, Darth Maul (Ray Park). Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, performing an amazing vocal imitation of Alec Guinness, the older Obi-Wan) are called on to intervene in the trade disputes. Along the way, they acquire an apprentice of their own in the form of young prodigy Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), or as STAR WARS fans know him, the future Darth Vader. They also encounter Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), a goofy, lizardlike creature who has been banished from his underwater world for clumsiness. When the Trade Federation launches an attack on Naboo, the queen and her allies must battle hordes of robot troopers while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face off against the sinister Darth Maul. A nice little bundle of joy.
Well, what can be said about this movie that hasn't already been said? I really like the packaging for this widescreen edition. The box is nice, the film cel is a cool added touch and the Art of Phantom Menace preview book are nice goodies. Very good marketing strategy, Lucasfilm! About the film itself, George Lucas definitely seems to be putting kids first in the Star Wars series, and it all started with Return of the Jedi (which is still better than Phantom Menace). He went from the darkest, most intense film, The Empire Strikes Back, to the most corny (belching, Tarzan yells, etc...) of the original series, R.O.T.J. The trend continues in The Phantom Menace. People are very mixed over Jar Jar binks. Some hate him (me!) and some will defend him until they're blue in the face. (they are ... In fact, the pod-racing scenes are reason enough to buy this movie. It's definitely my favorite scene in the movie and brings back the fun of the speeder bike chase in Jedi. The space battles are great as usual and the backdrops of Naboo are absolutely beautiful! They also did a nice job with the skeletal C3-PO. As for the acting, it is well done. Everyone does an admirable job, including Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Darth Sidious and young Jake Lloyd as Anakin Skywalker. Plus, the intriguing Darth Maul had one of the best entrances I've ever seen! The only thing that mars the performances is that the dialog is pretty dry, and the 'Lloydisms' can be a little tiresome. All in all, this is a very enjoyable film despite its flaws.

I'M 38 AND I'VE SEEN THE ORIGINAL STARWARS TRILOGY AND YES THAT WAS AWESOME IN ITS OWN RIGHT WITH WHAT LITTLE THEY HAD TO WORK WITH! BUT STOP LIVING IN THE GRAINY PAST-THE NEWER BATCH IS BETTER WITH THE CGI! I CAN ROLL WITH THE NEW! the stuff i didn't like in the movie was: #1). Jake Lloyd?(the kid). most kids cannot act, and unfortunately he cant either, #2). Jar Jar Binx- a star wars version of Barney-something to throw in for the little kids to fall in love with starwars, like they're not going to anyway.....that character was just totally wrong for the series....oh well, someone had a job,:), #3). killing off DARTH MAUL so quickly! ARRRRGGGGG! all that awesome martial arts talent for maybe 10 minutes of movie time??? bunk, thatz show biz-ness? THE POD RACE ...
