    Wrenching movie

Tom Hanks' portrayal of a young man with AIDS is absolutely wrenching and totally engaging. The court room scenes when he is hammered about his life style and decisions are especially hard to watch objectively. For me I was enraged by the tactics used by his former employers' lawyer. As a retired public health nurse who lived through the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, I thought that both the homophobia and the fear of the disease was accurately described. Seeing this movie brought it all back for me. Should be mandatory viewing at least at the college level -with discussion. Great, great movie even when the ending at least for Hanks' character is obvious.

  • New condition. Well packaged. Great price.

This in my opinion is one of Tom Hank's best roles. Its a heartbraking story re- garding one man's treatment by his em- ployer, when he has aids. This was back when the outbreak first began, & society didn't know much about it. It is riveting.

  • Philadelphia

Andrew Beckett is a young up-and-coming lawyer who has just been fired by his prestigious law firm. His former colleagues claim he's just not good enough; Andrew says he's been fired because he has AIDS. Determined to defend his professional reputation; Andrew hires fierce personal-injury attorney Joe Miller to represent him as he sues his former firm for wrongful termination. Separated from Andrew by a deep social and cultural chasm, Joe is initially reluctant to take the case. For Andrew the battle is clear cut--he's fighting for his reputation, his life and for justice. Joe, however, faces a different kind of struggle as he confronts his own fears and prejudices about homosexuals. Philadelphia is a brilliant movie. You have to have an open mind and not be so prejudice to ...

  • POWERFUL & GRIPPING!! OUTSTANDING Film!!

If you haven't seen this film, you really are missing something fantastic. The way this film tackles the issue of AIDS head on is brilliant and the cast is simply superb and really help bring the film to life! However, perhaps the most brilliant aspect of this film is that, although it is advertised as a film about AIDS (which of course, it is) it is as much about the attitudes of society towards homosexuality as it is about AIDS. The clever bit is that the films producers clearly understood modern attitudes and were aware that a groundbreaking film about AIDS would get far higher viewing figures than a film about homosexuality. However, by the time you realise that the film is not just about AIDS, you are hooked and only the most devout homophobe would not be touched and have their ...

  • Great Movie.

It was an emotional film. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington give excellent performances of their careers. Hanks is Andrew Beckett, a Philadelphia lawyer working at the city's top law firm. When Beckett is diagnosed with AIDS, he gets fired, although his law firm claims he was incompetent and lazy that is why he was fired. Washington is Joe Miller, a lawyer who takes Beckett's case. One of Tom Hanks best films of his career, it was very sad when Beckett was in the hospital with an oxygen mask on his face, lost his hair, and yellow skin. I cried when i seen that part, of course he passes away at the end of the movie, which was obvious would happen throughout the film. Highly recommend to anyone!!!
