About this product

Product Information

First published in 1776, The Wealth of Nations is generally regarded as the foundation of contemporary economic thought. Adam Smith, a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, expounded the then-revolutionary doctrine of economic liberalism. The book's importance was immediately recognized by Smith's peers, and later economists have shown an unusual consensus in their admiration for his ideas. Combining economics, political theory, history, philosophy, and practical programs, Smith assumes that human self-interest is the basic psychological drive behind economics and that a natural order in the universe makes all the individual, self-interested strivings add up to the social good. His conclusion, that the best program is to leave the economic process alone and that government is useful only as an agent to preserve order and to perform routine functions, is now known as laissez-faire economics or noninterventionism. In noting for the first time the significance of the division of labor and by stating the hypothesis that a commodity's value correlates to its labor input, Smith anticipated the writings of Karl Marx. Like Marx's Das Capital and Machiavelli's The Prince, his great book marked the dawning of a new historical epoch.

    Good product for required reading.

The physical book is good, nice size print, and well constructed. The price was quite a bit cheaper than Am@z0n. Remember that the contents of the book is not based off of Smith’s lectures. “Wealth of Nations” has been referred to as the largest collection of plagiarism in history (Murray Rothbard).

  • On The Wealth Of Nations by Adam Smith

Adam Smith is to economics as Newton is to physics, or Copernicus to astronomy. He is that important. The only drawback is that the English is over two centuries old and a bit stuffy at times, but Smith makes it fairly easy to digest and even manages a little humor. As economic works go, this one is the most entertaining (the 17th century tulip bubble is a wonderful lesson in .com economics!) in that he uses real historical examples, not charts and graphs of moving averages. I suspect Smith would use moving average charts as bathmats because they do not address the basic fundamentals necessary to monetary understanding. To Smith, they would be considered a waste of time because he would find little they have to do with economics. That is, unless one is interested in what happened to ...

  • Nice book, quality and value.

Book is in good shape, great quality and overall satisified. I have read the summary and what a friend told me about it, but haven’t read it. More than happy to do so soon.

  • This is what Capitalism should be.

Your mom should have given you a Bible and your Dad should have given you a copy of Wealth of Nations. Most of the modern ills in our economy were warned against in this book back in 1776. Smith was fighting a capricious King who was demonstrating that things the FED and the government do now just aren't prudent. Such as moving the manufacturing base overseas and wild subsidies. It isn't the easiest read and it is very long. But it foretold a great many things. A must have for conservative or Constitutional thought.
