The Civil War: A Narrative by Shelby Foote makes reading a history book fun.
The historian started his writing career as a novelist so the narrative in his three volume civil war history reads like a good novel; never boring. it also has details, just as interesting, that I've never seen in other books. Shelby Foote's Civil War: A Narrative is a good read: a long read, but a good one.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Of course it is the third volume in a set of three. I started reading Volume One and could not stop until I finished all three. In fact, I didn't even stop then, as I went back and read Volume One again. Then, believe it or not, some twenty five years later, now I have begun reading them yet again, and am now almost done with Volume Two. Not only is the trilogy a great cover of the war, it is simply a thrill to read, as it was written with a style and approach that captures one's attention and imagination. I'm such a fan of Shelby Foote now that I have even visited his homes in Memphis, bought nearly all of his books (novels), and begun to read the various biographies that I can find. I only wish I had met him before he passed away in 2005. I ... This is one of the best books I have ever read. Of course it is the third volume in a set of three. I was fortunate enough to have taken a class under Dr. James Robertson, a Civil War scholar at Va. Tech., and that probably lit the fire of my interest in the war. Mr. Foote took that fire and turned it into a bonfire. I just cannot say enough good about this book and its preceding volumes.
