This gleefully deranged cult favorite marked the feature debut of Jack Hill (COFFY, THE SWITCHBLADE SISTERS) and one of the final screen appearances of horror icon Lon Chaney Jr. The story takes place at the home of the Merrye family, victims of a strange disease that degenerates its victims to a pre-human, cannibal state. The sole remaining survivors are the family chauffeur, Bruno (Chaney), sexually precocious sisters Elizabeth (Beverly Washburn) and Virginia (Jill Banner) and their animal-like brother Ralph (Sid Haig). The kids like to stalk and kill anything that gets into the yard, including an unlucky telegram messenger (Mantan Moreland), and when some greedy relatives eager to claim the family fortune intrude upon their familial bliss, an evening of wild, murderous thrills is certain.Hill leavens the gruesome horrors of this film with sly wit, and even some touching moments; a tearful monologue by Chaney is a surprisingly moving highlight, and works eloquently as a farewell from the great star. Chanry also sings the zany title song. Fans of THE ADDAMS FAMILY or the films of Tim Burton are urged to check out this special midnight treat, which only gets better with repeat viewings.

    Lon Chaney Jr adds class & poignancy to campy horror comedy

    This movie gets better & better the more you watch it. It's not for every taste, but if your list of top ten films includes The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cannibal: The Musical, Psycho, and Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, I guarantee you'll love Spider Baby. The sex is implied rather than shown. The violence is likewise offscreen; we see someone stabbing downward with a knife, and in the next scene we see a non-bloody but dead body. Horror icon Sid Haig, in one of his first roles, manages to make his character likable. Lon Chaney Jr, as the caretaker who genuinely loves the mentally challenged but homicidal teenagers in his care, almost brought tears to my eyes. I work with developmentally delayed adults, and I expected this vintage film to be offensive in its portrayal of the teens ...

    Chaney Jr. is great!

    I bought this DVD because I was told it was one of the very first "strange" films of it's type. And it delivers on that. Lon Chaney Jr. is amiable and layered in one of his best roles in a lot of years, and newcomer Sid Haig is odd in one of his very first films. The movie is well paced, unusual, and holds interest throughout. Recommended to fans of Chaney Jr. and genre fans in general.

    well now -- low budget, micro budget, seminal wannabe horror flick from the fifties,,, but some notable actors got a start, and a notable icon got a finish. Two really nice cars. Non existent script. Bad audio. BUT,,, it was a marker in film history. Archival, if not good cinema, it was no doubt, known to Billy Bob Briggs as a drive-in classic.

    "Spider Baby" is a gem of a movie that belongs on your `must see` list!

    This is an amazing story filmed in B&W on a limited budget with top notch acting. There is even a salute to Alfred Hitchcock in the plot and characterizations of the movie. "Spider Baby" is a horror story with flair and style. And Lon Chaney,Jr., who stars in the movie, sings a haunting song during the opening credits. This is one movie you will want to watch during a storm on a cold winter's night. But make sure you first lock all the doors and windows. Extras in the DVD release include deleted scenes and a 30 year reunion of cast members and dedicated fans of the movie at a midnight showing of the movie at the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles. Two thumbs up! Enjoy!
