    A stereotype-shattering description of God's nature.

The Shack provides several outstanding things to love. 1) It shows God in unexpected ways, but fully within the scope of what's possible. 2) The main character has a very real problem - his beloved little daughter is kidnapped and murdered. He's familiar with God, but a God who can let him be abused by an alcoholic father, and let his innocent little girl get murdered simply is NOT the kind of God he can look up to, much less worship. 3) The most valuable part for me - little by little, with zero coercion, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit draw him out, so that he expresses his anguish, his fears, and his doubts very forthrightly. And God helps him to see his experiences from a new point of view so that he can forgive those responsible for the atrocities he has suffered. Outstanding. ...

  • Top critical review

    Buy the REAL thing.

DVD and packaging was low quality and a clear knockoff. DVD menu is exclusively in Spanish and plays with Spanish subtitles. The volume fluctuates while watching, additionally whining/humming sounds will interfere with the experience. Spend the extra money, get the real thing.

  • Emotional ride with an undercurrent that carries you away and leaves you gently.

Real life- Heart wrenching struggle .....what do you do when the child you loved so much disappears ??? Feeling helpless ...angry.. guilty... the list goes on....and the God you thought could cover all ..... is no where to be seen... you believe....you can't believe..... This story achieves something I would think could not resolve all the pain that would happen in the devastating tragedy of a child abducted and ... well you watch....all encompassing .... I cried so much !! ( I'm a woman ) but the depth of the story brings me to a place I can stand and wipe away my tears. Leaving me with a sense of understanding. Worth the watching !

  • not preachy while dealing with supreme being impression

When I first saw this movie, I groaned inwardly when it started to look like an overtly religious movie. But I watched it and am glad I did. I don't like any forum pushing religion. I don't believe in organized religion. But this movie isn't about religion, but based on a terrible event and a man's questioning how a merciful God could allow the disaster to happen. The way the movie deals with how God is seen and experienced is one of the best ways I have seen displayed. I recommend this movie and invite each viewer to make up their mind about how they view their own deity.

  • Poor Special Effects to Properly Interpret the Author's Descriptiona!

The original novel is weak as a novel; it's poorly balanced and is weak in building the plot. The movie corrects this, but also has weaknesses. The acting is sound, but the special effects are poor and do not follow the descriptions of the author's words, which are superb! The movie's ending does not follow the book's ending, which changes the realism of the plot. The movie could have been much better with a larger budget to better express the author's descriptions!
