A Very Clean Sounding DAC
As you would expect from a Sony product, the unit is solidly built, compact, and clear and easy to use. With the DAC being removed from the iPhone 7 Plus and integrated into its Lightening earphones, the Sony PHA-1A Wolfson DAC fills in the gap created by the removal of the DAC from the iPhone. The sonic difference is immediately noticeable when listening through the PHA-1A with a pair of quality headphones or earphones. I think the operative word here is "quality." I'm using a pair of Periodic Beryllium earphones when listening through the PHA-1A. The sound is clean with very tight bass (not muddied) and doesn't produce any listening fatigue. Impressive dac/amp!
The PHA-1A paired with MDR-1A headphones /Iphone4 is a great sounding combo. The music regardless of genre is very pleasant, musical and clear across the audio frequency range. Both the PHA-1A and MDR-1A are built so well that you can see and feel. If you want a good sounding headphone setup with portability and good quality...this may be for you. You really get what you paid for! Sony could have added an analog and/or an optical input to be an all around/versatile DAC/AMP....The PHA-1A paired with MDR-1A headphones /Iphone4 is a great sounding combo. Awesome product & price
I use a set of Pinnacle P1 ear buds with a Sony Hi Res Walkman and this amp, wow, what a difference. My setup sounded pretty good before but it lacked the punch and detail that this adds to the music. The price at $199 is a great price for this unit.

Shows sign of age but still sounds fantastic
I really only see 2 issues with this product: short battery life and a popping/crackling sound when connected to my iPhone. There’s probably some cable to help with the iPhone, but I’m not an audio expert. Otherwise the thing is awesome! Music sounds soooo good when played through it.

increased output for plug in to other equipment
Not only better & increased output for headphones but increased output for plugging into car or home audio to get higher volumes to release the sound from high res files your phone is not capable of outputting on it's own.
