    Synopsis
William Goldman's beloved novel has sold over one million copies. A movie, released twenty years ago, perfectly captured the spirit of the book and has introduced new fans to its pages ever since. In 1941 a young boy lies bedridden from pneumonia. His perpetually disheveled and unattractive father, an immigrant from Florin with terribly broken English, shuffles into his bedroom carrying a book. The boy wants to know if it has any sports. His father says, "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions. Miracles." And the little boy, though he doesn't know it, is about to change forever. As Goldman says, "What happened was just this. I got hooked on the story." And coming generations of readers will, too. And coming generations of readers will too., Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an "abridged" retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to "Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.", William Goldman's beloved story of Buttercup, Westley, and their fellow adventurers. This tale of true love, high adventure, pirates, princesses, giants, miracles, fencing, and a frightening assortment of wild beasts was unforgettably depicted in the 1987 film directed by Rob Reiner and starring Fred Savage, Robin Wright, and others. But, rich in character and satire, the novel boasts even more layers of ingenious storytelling. William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is an exceptional story about quests--for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love--that's thrilling and timeless for readers of all ages., In this 30th anniversary edition, Goldman frames the famous fairy tale with an "autobiographical" story; his father had abridged the book as he read it to his son. Now, Goldman is publishing an abridged version, interspersed with comments on the parts that had been cut out., William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love that's thrilling and timeless. Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible inconceivable, even to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Amazing all the way

The book is great, I’m reading it for class. Just a heads up, this is the “good parts version” I’m not sure if they included the rest of the pages in the other version but this one is perfect for classes because it has all the full points of the book as dictated by the author but without the extra pages that only talk about things that don’t have a lot of content related to the main story line. Such as the history of florenstein which is 60 pages and not included in this book. In good condition and sent quickly. Love it!

Repetitive, Self-Congratulatory Writing that Rode the Wave of Its Popular Movie

Don't believe the hype. If this book had never been made into a movie that has become a beloved classic among those who were parents in the 80's and their children who grew up watching it, nobody would have ever read this travesty. In fact, I intend to look up the sales numbers of this book before and after its film release. It focuses, not on The Princess Bride, a fictional story written by William Goldman which he fictionalizes as having been written by another writer, but on Goldman himself. You don't open the book and begin with a sick child and his sweet grandfather. No, you open it and begin with a story of Goldman's infatuation with his teacher, a little bit about his father who reads to him in broken English (which is not as endearing as you might think), and Goldman complaining ...

      • Excellent Story

I've loved this story since I first read it when I was a child. I love everything about this story, and to finally replace my original copy was great. I would highly recommend this book if you love stories about pirates, love, and the good guys winning in the end!

      • Great book/story.

The best "love story" I've ever read. It's just as good as the movie! Buying it from Goodwill for charity was a win/win. Book was in good condition (better than one previously bought at higher price).
