Great cane, but requires modification to rate 5 stars
I carry a cane due to a hostile fire helicopter shootdown that left me with 6 trashed disks and spinal related nerve damage in my left leg. Also, I like canes because of self defense aspect (65 y/o, but still Soldier for Life). Review of 3 canes in COMPARISON, STRENGHS+WEAKNESSES, and SOLUTION format. COMPARISONS: Cane 1: standard medical assist cane - fiberglass - light and strong, but curve in handle too tight which hampers use for self defense - least expensive. Cane 2: KA-BAR - all metal - heavy and slow for fast strikes - built like a tank - curve on handle perfect for self defense - more expensive than Cane 3: United Cutlery cane. Cane 3 (and primary focus of review): United Cutlery Defense Hook Cane - poly composition - light and strong - perfect weight for fast strikes - ... SOLUTION - remove approx 1 inch of materiel from the end of the handle of the United Cutlery cane and match to KA-BAR pointed tip. This maintains same pressure point tip at the end of the handle while reducing the overall length of the handle. I can now twirl the UC cane like a high school cheerleader, but sorry boys, I'm already married. My EDC cane is the United Cutlery cane, but I'm emailing a copy of this review to the company. The designer, "Night Watchman", obviously did little field testing. JD

Im very impressed with the cane..cut at 36 inch length mine weighs 1lb 6.5 oz...it is approx 23.5 mm thick so use a 7/8 cane tip not a typical one inch cane tip.I prefer the sleeker ACE hardwear rubber tips over the huge medical chunky rubber type..the crook is narrow about 3&3/4 inch across and doesnt hook around my 16 1/2 inch shirt size neck...I own the coldsteel poly canes and for some reason this poly cane seems a bit harder and stiffer but that may be my imagination..my coldsteel blackthorn seems to be softer/flexier than this cane even tho its much thicker..I like the thinner 7/8 th shaft for a bit dressier style since one inch diameter canes look too medical and bulky for my style of dress and I am still young and vain... I have no martial arts background and all my training is ... I have no martial arts background and all my training is from the military and since I have a prosthetic leg I dont plan to or have any desire to attempt to perform unrealistic hook locks and armchair warrior fighting styles so take my review of those attributes with a grain of salt..Im not saying those styles of fighting arent possible but if you actually use a cane you cant be twisting and turning your body without falling so I would use my background from 8 yrs of infantry and time on a bayonet training cadre for more realistic techniques. The shaft has light stippled grip areas near the crook and at the bottom.. on the inside edge there is very light very shallow scallop cutouts like a canemasters but they would be pretty ineffective on this cane and the stippling and scallops only barely help with grip,but they are better then nothing..the horn point is well formed and actually looks very nice..it is not overly sharp but would work as intended im sure..on the outside curve of the crook the are a few scallops but again it appears they would be too shallow to do much and are in a strange location but I actually like them because they add a neat profile look to the hook as opposed to most canes of this type with a plain crook. Overall I am very pleasently suprized and happy with the cane.. it does have a bit of flex at my 6ft 220lbs but not as bad as I expected for a 7/8th poly cane..if you accept that this is not as refined as a canemasters( I have two and tho they are very nice they are honestly overhyped/priced for what they are) you will like this cane.. ..before this united cutlery I carried my Robaina raven more then the canemasters since the slight warps in the cane masters shaft drove me nuts to look at...if you truly train to flip people around with the crook get the cane masters or robaina cane since those crooms are big enough for those moves.....the other advantage of this cane as opposed to the canemasters or robaina is that both are one inch ( actually bit over 1 inch for canemasters) and to my eyes seem overly medical...most probably wont care about that and some who just want to carry for self defense may prefer that, but I actually use a cane and am young enough and vain enough in my style that I like the dressier thinner shaft and smaller crook of the united cutlery.. Edited add on update: I can indeed say the united cane is a stiffer material then my coldsteel poly items...I pulled out my blackthorn and my poly training stafe. Both are over 1 inch thick and i can easily grasp them both at 36 inches with one hand and flex them a fair amount. The 7/8th united cane is noticeably harder to flex, tho it will flex.. Looking closely at the cut ends of the blackthorn and the united reveal that the coldsteel is a softer plastic..im not saying that is bad and may actually prevent breakage better then a harder stiffer plastic, but it does verify my initial suspicion...I personally prefer that United plastic. It also appears to truly have fibers in the poly which may back up the nylon poly material claims tho I do not know about plastic compisitions to give a educated statement beyong that...the cold steel poly is more pure soft plastic compared to the united but the united works better for a low flex cane

This is the second cane I've owned since losing some function in one leg. The first one is a $16 aluminum cane I got at a big box store. Nothing wrong with it, used only as a cane. Use it for self-defense, I have no doubt it will bend easily. I walk through my rural neighborhood with my senior citizen dog, on a leash. Some people let their large dogs run loose. Most of these dogs are peaceful but some are aggressive. My old boy is just not capable of fighting anymore and I don't want him to. I know the feeling. If you've ever tried to break up a fight between large dogs, you know how dangerous that is. I do and I have scars to prove it and they were only 50 pound dogs. I ordered a custom made hickory cane, which is good for walking and self-defense but, very expensive and ... This is the second cane I've owned since losing some function in one leg. It can take a beating and deliver one, as well. The hook is perfect for pulling someone a way. I'd sure rather use the cane to pull a 100 pound dog of another dog, than my hand. It's also a lot longer than the 16" collapsible baton I've been carrying on these walks. Again, I'd much rather have a 36" tool than a 16" tool when my hands could be in the middle of two fighting dogs. It was easy to adjust the size. Physical therapist said my perfect cane height is 36 1/2". I cut this one down carefully with a hacksaw. I have power tools but I figured I'd be less likely to mess it up if I went slow. It only took about 3 minutes to cut through it. Then I leveled it with a hand sander. Now the tip is level and the cane measures 36 1/8". With the cane tip back in place it will be the perfect length. I'll feel a lot safer walking my dog now. I hope I never have to use this cane for anything but keeping my balance but, it's better to have it an not need it, than need it and not have it! It will keep me from falling on my face, at least as well as my aluminum cane.

Nice heavy cane.
Love the texture and lines, got a nice weight to it so it can take abuse. Only thing I did not like was the defense tip not much grip on my wood floor so changed it with a 7/8 rubber tip. Cut off to my size real nice on my table saw.

I don't think I'll ever have to buy another cane unless I happen to lose it.
This is a very good cane , especially if you really need a cane, this thing is endistructable, I wore out several canes before I found this one, I've had it for over a year and replaced 4 tips on it , that should tell how much I have to use a cane and it still looks brand new .
