Great to have the deleted songs back!
Back in 1983, Jeff Lynne had begun getting tired of the ELO concept, and intended this album to be the final album for ELO. He wrote enough songs for a double album, which would have fulfilled his contract...but, the record company insisted on two separate releases and forced him to par this album down to a single LP. With this new release, we finally get back the deleted songs (and in their original running order), with the except of one track called "Beatles Forever" which Jeff decided he never wants to release, because he became good friends with the Beatles and most especially George Harrison later on, and I'm sure he felt this song sounded like a "silly fan boy". I've heard a poor quality bootleg of the song, and I agree with Jeff's decision to bury the song forever. Of the ... Of the original single LP version of this album, my personal favorite tunes were the title track (Secret Messages), Danger Ahead and Train Of Gold. There are also plenty of other great songs too. I never was much of a fan of Letter From Spain, and have always wished that on that single LP version that they'd replaced it with one of the deleted tracks. The big single from the album, Rock-N-Roll Is King, is in my opinion one of the weakest tracks. I'm sure the record company wanted to capitalize off the success of the single Hold On Tight from the previous album TIME, which had a similar "rockabilly" sound, and thought this would be the best one. But, it's far from the best on this album. If you bought the cassette version when Secret Messages was originally released, you got the song Time After Time as a bonus. I think it may have also been on the first CD version released as well. I didn't start buying CDs until a few years later, and my first CD version of this album was one that was released many years later. But, Time After Time is now back on this album, in it's original running order along with the other unreleased tracks, except the aforementioned Beatles Forever. The original version of Endless Lies is on this new release. It was originally deleted when the album went to single LP, and Jeff Lynne re-used the song, in a fairly altered version on the next ELO album, Balance Of Power. It might be because I heard the BOP version first, and for many years...but, I have always thought the BOP version of the song was better than the SM version. It sounds like both versions were created using the same basic studio tracks, but just some of the elements of the songs have been changes...some musical changes here and there, and the words are a little different between the two versions. Standouts from the added back tracks include No Way Out, Mandalay and Hello My Old Friend...with that last track being the best of the lot, and it has the most "classic ELO" sound of any of the tracks. There is one short-coming with this album...and that is that a great deal of the drums on this album are drum machine, rather than Bev Bevan behind his Slingerland Drum Set. Bev is still on this album, on a number of tracks...sometimes he shares time with a drum machine on certain tracks...but, I'd rather have had Bev on every track...all the way through the songs. I'm sure that Jeff intended Hello My Old Friend to be the final track from ELO forever. It even includes "frere Jacque" interpolated into the fade out portion of the song, which echoes the same thing as done on cello on the very first ELO song ever, 10538 Overture, the opening track from the band's first album. I feel certain that this was Jeff's way of giving a nod to the first album, and creating a perfect "bookend" to the ELO discography. Other than that, Secret Messages (any version ever released) is a great album, and worth the money. It's a much better album than the actual "final" album released by ELO...Balance Of Power. Special Note: For those who do not know...Jeff Lynne reformed ELO in a new version in 2001 and released an album called ZOOM. There was a tour planned, but was cancelled. Then in 2015, Jeff changed the name of the group to Jeff Lynne's ELO (to avoid confusion with ELO Part 2, which was some of the other members of a previous version of ELO, without Jeff). He released Alone In The Universe, and then in 2019 released From Out Of Nowhere, both under the "Jeff Lynne's ELO" name, and has toured extensively the last few years to sold out and nearly sold out arenas in the US and Europe/UK.
