About this product

Product Information

In this engaging drama from Switzerland, a child prodigy finds a unique way of dealing with being different. Vitus is no normal child. With a 180 IQ, a voracious appetite for knowledge, and a preternatural gift at playing the piano, he finds it hard to fit in with his peers. Like many parents of exceptional children, his mother and father (Julika Jenkins and Urs Jucker) are overbearing, eager to see their child succeed. But as his parents push and fellow children jeer, Vitus's grandfather (Bruno Ganz, THE DOWNFALL) simply allows the boy to be himself.Though VITUS follows the blueprint for childhood prodigy movies (such as SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER and the first act of SHINE) a bit too closely at times, it's saved by a great cast and some interesting twists. As the 12-year-old Vitus, Teo Gheorghiu, himself a piano prodigy, heightens the sense of realism in the film. The classic music he plays is beautiful, and the actor's playing itself is remarkable. Audiences used to seeing hand doubles in films about musicians will be presently surprised to see that there aren't any cuts, displaying Gheorghiu's incredible talent. Veteran actor Ganz has literally played everything from an angel to Hitler in his decades-long career, and he's wonderful here as Vitus's warm grandfather and best friend. As a result of great performances like these, it's easy to see why VITUS was the Swiss entry to the Oscars.Though VITUS follows the blueprint for childhood prodigy movies (such as SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER and the first act of SHINE) a bit too closely at times, it's saved by a great cast and some interesting twists. All-time classic child genius story.

I love how Vitus solves the problem of his mother's expectations for him depriving him of a childhood by pretending to be brain-damaged. I love how his grandpa keeps his secret and how Vitus solves his grandpa's money problems and gets his father's job back. Vitus outsmarts all the adults in his life and becomes the hero of his family with his smarts and his courage. I only wish this disc was a Blu-ray.

  • A Great Movie!

As a student majoring in German, this movie was very interesting just because I listened to the original version, spoken in Swiss-German. For those who don't understand it, there are subtitles as well as an English dub. As for the content of the movie, Vitus is the story of a musical prodigy, a young boy with immense talent. This fascinating look into the life of a very unique child is filled with tears and laughter. Vitus' parents, especially his mother, push him to pursue a musical career at a young age, and cannot see that Vitus is unhappy being treated as a piano-player before he is treated as a boy. Ostracized by other children who cannot relate to him, Vitus finds friendship in the form of his paternal grandfather, who recognizes that Vitus has the same feelings and dreams as ...

  • Very interesting story with excellent acting

A novel story line featuring a real life classical piano child prodigy centering on the boys growth and antics. The main force of the story is a very spirited 12 year old boy; how he affects his family, deals with life and his love for his grand father. Audio tract in Swiss-German with English subtitles. Very enjoyable with great real life piano performances by a gifted youth.

  • Vitus

Vitus is the story of a child prodigy who dominates all aspects of life: the piano; the stock market; fixed-wing aircraft; adults envy him; and in the end, initially rejecting Vitus, piques the curiosity of a former-babysitter who is senior to Vitus by 7 years. Vitus yearns to be "normal". During a storm, he fakes an accident and pretends to have a significantly lower I.Q. He has his family fooled until his grandfather catches Vitus playing the piano brilliantly. The grandfather keeps the secret until after his death. The secret of the injury is unveiled in a letter to Leo & Helen, Vitus' parents. Vitus saves his fathers reputation & income when he covertly purchases the company his father was fired from. Buy/Rent the DVD & see how he does it! This movie is a must-see even for the mature ...

  • AN EXCELLENT MOVIE, INSPIRATIONAL, GREAT FOR FAMILY

Not only is VITUS an excellent movie but to think that the child actor is actually a concert pianist.........just impresses us very much. We have enjoyed the DVD several times and it will remain on our shelf to watch many times more. My wife and I as well as our daughter are private pilots, so the aviation aspect is facinating to us also. One of the best movies we have ever seen. We rented VITUS first then decided to purchase for our movie library.
