The Perfect Collection - Almost
I have to say, that this collection, is something I have waited for over many years. The BB's, in my view, were one of the most underrated and underappreciated American groups to emerge during the British invasion. San Francisco's version of LA's The Byrds, and preceding the later on the charts, by some 6 months. They were unfortunately relegated to the small Autumn Label, limiting their promotion and exposure. Regardless of this disadvantage, they charted some stellar tracks before moving to Warner...This collection covers both labels to the max..Great sound - tracks in Mono and Stereo, singles, outtakes, demos, Elliott and Valentino solo efforts...it's all here.with the exception of the remarkable 1975 reunion album (Due to copyright issues)...my favorite BB LP. Hence the "Almost ... I have to say, that this collection, is something I have waited for over many years. A Glorious and Long Overdue Celebration of an Underrated Band
I hesitated to purchase this set in 2021 when it came out, only because I had two previous collections of the Beau Brummels' work from other labels, and the original list price was steep, plus there were a lot of other releases that I needed to have hitting the marketplace at the time. But I've bought it now, and have been luxuriating in its contents for well over a week. The Beau Brummels may have been the most underrated/under-estimated band of the entire folk-rock boom, based on the evidence here. The outtakes connected with their first album are superior to the actual releases of much of their competition, and the subsequent work shows no fall off, at least not until we get to the regrettable Beau Brummels '66, the record company-obligated album that interrupted their recording ... I hesitated to purchase this set in 2021 when it came out, only because I had two previous collections of the Beau Brummels' work from other labels, and the original list price was steep, plus there were a lot of other releases that I needed to have hitting the marketplace at the time. But I've bought it now, and have been luxuriating in its contents for well over a week. In a reasonably fair reality, any of the other stuff in this box could and would have given the band a profile nearly as high as that of the Byrds. And as I've long believed that Ron Elliott is one of the finest songwriters of the folk-rock era (a funny honor to be achieved by a guy who probably, in 1964, would rather have been apprenticed to Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim or Fred Ebb), this box is long overdue, for him, Sal Valentino, and the rest of the members.
