About this product

Product Information

Wanted: One young woman to take care of four-year-old boy. Must be cheerful, enthusiastic and selfless-bordering on masochistic Must relish sixteen-hour shifts with a deliberately nap-deprived pre-schooler Must love getting thrown up on, literally and figuratively, by everyone in his family Must enjoy the delicious anticipation of ridiculously erratic pay Mostly, must love being treated like fungus found growing out of employers Hermes bag. Those who take it personally need not apply. Who wouldn't want this job? Struggling to graduate from NYU and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a position caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved to ensure that a Park Avenue wife who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child has a smooth day. When the Xs marriage begins to disintegrate, Nanny ends up involved way beyond the bounds of human decency or good taste. Her tenure with the X family becomes a nearly impossible mission to maintain the mental health of their four-year-old, her own integrity and, most importantly, her sense of humor. Over nine tense months Mrs. X and Nanny perform the age-old dance of decorum and power as they test the limits of modern-day servitude. The Nanny Diaries deftly skewers the manner in which America's over-privileged raise les petites over-privileged-as if grooming them for a Best in Show competition. Written by two former nannies, this alternately comic and poignant satire punctures the glamour of Manhattan's upper class.

Item was as described. Open box with everything included inside. Shipping was fast and I like that the seller reused a cardboard shipping box rather than sending in something new. Would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again.

  • A Good look into Parenting of the Rich (in some cases-not all)

"The Nanny Diaries" is an entertaining read that is hard to put down. It's quite sad to see how some parents just shift their children off to nannies (over and over again) because they simply cannot be bothered. This story is a good look how some parents treat their children, and those who take full time care of them. I'll def. say it makes you think about how you treat your own children! Great book- Mrs and Mr X are fruserating, and Nanny is humerous and full of love. I would highly recommend it to all fans of the chick lit genre, and anyone else who wants a sneak peak at some of the hardships nannys go through to take care of children who arent their own!

  • Nanny Needs a Backbone Large Trade PB 2002

The first half was a fun read....got a lot of laughs about the very rich and their kids, but going into the second half, you come face to face with this shocking reality of how much out of touch these people are with their employees needs and lives and it dumps you into deep depression. I can only hope that not all the people they worked for were this cruel or demanding or inhuman. Scary! For future nanny's you might want to read this book very carefully and learn.

  • Funny but WAY too long

Read this for my bookclub and again, really had to push my self to get through it. It had it's funny parts which is always nice to space out on but it was way too long. Went into more detail than I cared to hear about. With all the drama this book had, going on for that long about it was too much. It needed to end sooner than it did. The characters are believable enough, sadly I think there are morons like that in NYC or where ever else people hire nanny's because they don't want to raise their children. As a stay at home mom of 2 children, I found Mrs. X's character to be a disgrace to mom's everywhere. The book definately creates strong emotion in the reader, so if you want to get really mad, read it!

  • Quick read but left me wanting more...

Read the book over a weekend this summer. I loved the first half of the book, really enjoyed its humor and well structured pace. The plot got more serious towards the middle of the book, but the authors did not do a good job tying the loose ends together at the end. I was quite disappointed at the end and wanted at the rather sudden ending. I will not read a book by the same authors again.

  • Delightful Reading

A hilarious look at life as a Nanny to the rich and fatuous. Authors have perfect pitch, and their every observation rings true. Social satire that's as moving as it is funny! Splendid First Novel for these authors!
