This steamy thriller to end all steamy thrillers stars Michael Douglas as Nick, a boozy San Francisco police detective who finds himself drawn to the prime suspect in a murder case--manipulative, sexually uninhibited novelist Catherine Trammell (Sharon Stone). Catherine's latest book features a murder uncannily similar to the one Nick is investigating, and as the pair engage in a mating dance of dangerous one-upmanship, more murders occur, all described in her current work, about a boozy cop in love with a killer. Nick's psychiatrist (Jeanne Tripplehorn), and cop partner (George Dzundza) are both worried about him, and Catherine's jealous lesbian lover (Leilani Sarelle) may be trying to kill him, but Nick is just too turned on to care.Director Paul Verhoeven shows an admirable lack of restraint in this ludicrously enjoyable thriller, a sort of postmodern noir with Joe Eszterhas's script coming off like Mamet by way of Penthouse. Stone and Douglas exhibit fine chemistry (and most of their bodies), and there's some lovely Bay Area scenery courtesy of cinematographer Jan de Bont (who went on to direct films such as SPEED and TWISTER). Wayne Knight (Newman from SEINFELD) and Mitch Pileggi (Skinner from THE X-FILES) are precinct heads who question Catherine in the infamous leg-crossing scene.

    Basic Instinct

    I would describe this as a very sexually graphic erotic thriller in which a police detective (Douglas) falls for the suspect (Stone) in the murder of her lover. I believe it came out in the 80s and I see why it would be so controversial back then. I rated it as good because they did a decent job of keeping you guessing who the murderer really is. The plot though was kind of predictable and corny and the ever increasing pile of dead bodies seemed more like breaks between the sex scenes than a cleverly woven suspense movie. Overall most of the actors did a great job (except the professor who was called in to consult with the police before they called in Stone's character for questioning- he so overacted his small part). I'm glad to have finally seen this movie but i'm not sure what all the ...

    It's a "Basic Instinct" to watch this movie

    I just watched Basic Instinct a couple days ago, and let me say this is not at all what I expected it to be. Filled with mystery, erotic violence, and sexual entities, Basic Instinct is a great movie anchored by strong performances in the best movie I have seen Sharon Stone in. Giving a seductive and luring performance really hit the go as I started watching more and more of her movies for the first time (i.e. Casino, Alpha Dog, Basic Instinct 2, Total Recall). Noting that she was great, she is now one of my favorite actresses in the business today.

    Sex, intrigue, drama; riveting

    Intriguing movie, keeps viewer riveted throughout. Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas are well cast as lovers/adversaries. Director's cut reveals interesting background data, which had been previously unknown to me. I am very satisfied to have purchased this item.
